How to Sand a Deck: The Right Grit, the Right Order

Grey, splintery boards can look new again. But sand it wrong and the stain will not stick.

How to sand a deck properly — cleaning first, why you must stop at 80 grit, checking the wood is dry enough, and the sequence that makes a finish last years instead of months.

A weathered deck is one of the most satisfying things to restore. Grey, rough, splintery boards come back to warm timber in a single weekend, and the transformation is dramatic.

But decks have two rules that catch people out, and both are the opposite of what furniture work teaches you.

Rule one: stop at 60 or 80 grit. Sanding a deck smooth like a tabletop closes the wood’s pores, and then your stain or sealer cannot soak in. It sits on top, and it peels within a season.

Rule two: the wood must be genuinely dry before you seal it. Not “it has not rained today” dry — properly dry, right through. Sealing damp timber traps moisture and causes peeling, mildew and rot.

Get those two right and the rest is straightforward. ✅

Should You Sand Your Deck at All?

Sanding is the right answer for some decks and a waste of a weekend for others. Check before you start.

Sand it if:

  • The boards are rough or splintery — the most common reason, and sanding genuinely fixes it.
  • The timber has gone grey and furry from UV exposure.
  • Old stain or sealer is flaking and patchy.
  • You are switching from a film-forming finish to a penetrating oil.

Do not sand it — fix something else first — if:

  • Boards are soft or spongy. Push a screwdriver into suspect areas. If it sinks in, that is rot, and sanding a rotten board just makes a thinner rotten board.
  • Boards are loose, cracked or badly cupped. Replace or refix them first.
  • The structure underneath is questionable. Joists, posts and fixings matter far more than the surface.
  • The deck is composite — see the section below.

And sometimes you can skip sanding entirely. If the boards are smooth and sound but simply dirty and grey, a deck cleaner and brightener often restores them well enough that sanding is unnecessary. Clean first and then decide — you may save yourself the whole job.

⚠️ Check the structure before you spend a weekend on the surface. A beautifully restored deck on failing joists is a hazard, not an achievement. Look underneath: check joists for rot where they meet posts, check ledger board fixings into the house, and check for rusted fasteners. If anything looks doubtful, get it assessed before you refinish.

Clean First — This Is Not Optional

Sanding a dirty deck is a waste of abrasive. Dirt, algae and old finish clog the paper within minutes, and you will get through three times as much for a worse result.

The sequence that works:

  1. Sweep and clear everything off, including furniture and planters. Clean out the gaps between boards with a putty knife or a paint stirrer — trapped debris holds moisture and rots boards from below.
  2. Apply a deck cleaner. These lift dirt, algae, mildew and greying. Follow the dwell time on the label and do not let it dry on the surface.
  3. Scrub with a stiff brush, working along the boards.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with a hose.
  5. Consider a deck brightener if you used a cleaner containing bleach or sodium percarbonate. Brighteners are usually oxalic acid based and restore the wood’s natural tone as well as neutralising the cleaner.
  6. Let it dry completely. This is where the moisture meter earns its place — see the next section.
⚠️ Be careful with pressure washers. They are popular and they damage a lot of decks. Too much pressure erodes the soft early wood between the grain lines, leaving a permanently furry, ridged surface that then needs far more sanding than before. If you use one, fit a wide fan tip, keep the pressure low, hold the nozzle well back, and keep it moving along the boards. Never hold it close or use a pinpoint tip.

How Dry Is Dry Enough?

This is the step people guess at, and guessing is why finishes fail.

After cleaning — and especially after pressure washing — timber holds a lot of water. The surface dries in hours, but the wood underneath takes far longer. Seal it too early and you trap that moisture. The result is peeling finish, mildew growing under the coating, and in bad cases rot.

The target: below about 15% moisture content for most deck stains and sealers. Some products specify lower, so check the tin.

How to judge it:

  • Use a moisture meter. Press the pins into several boards, including shaded areas and the ends. It takes seconds and removes all doubt.
  • The water drop test is a rough backup. Sprinkle water on the boards. If it beads and sits, the wood is still too wet or still sealed. If it soaks in within a few seconds, it is ready to accept a finish.
  • Allow time. Two to three dry days after cleaning is typical; longer in humid or cool weather, and longer again for shaded areas and thick boards.

Sand when dry, seal when dry. Sanding damp timber also clogs abrasive badly and leaves a fuzzy surface, so the waiting helps both stages.

For most home decks, a random orbital sander is the practical answer. It is controllable, it will not gouge, and you probably already own one. A hired orbital floor sander is worth considering for a large deck — it covers ground far faster and, unlike the drum sanders used on interior floors, it is very difficult to damage boards with.

Why You Stop at 80 Grit

This is the rule that surprises everyone who has sanded furniture.

Deck finishes are penetrating products. Stains and oils work by soaking into the wood, not by forming a film on top. To soak in, they need the wood’s pores open.

Sanding fine burnishes the surface — it polishes the fibres flat and closes those pores. The board looks lovely and bare. Then the stain sits on top instead of penetrating, dries as a thin film, and flakes off within a season of foot traffic and weather.

A deck is not furniture. You are not making it smooth to the touch — you are leaving it open enough to drink. Every extra grit past 80 works against the finish you are about to apply.

The standard sequence is simply 60 then 80. On a deck in reasonable condition, 80 alone is often enough. That is the whole grit plan — far simpler than furniture work. Our grit chart explains the wider principle.

⚠️ The most common deck-finishing failure: sanding to 120 or finer because it feels like the careful, thorough thing to do. The boards look beautiful, the stain goes on, and it peels off in sheets within months. If your last deck finish failed early and you cannot work out why, this is very often the reason.

Step by Step, Start to Finish

Step 1 — Check the weather window

You need several dry days: time to clean, time to dry, time to sand, and time to seal. Check the forecast before you start, and avoid working in direct hot sun, which makes finishes dry too fast and flash off unevenly.

Step 2 — Clear and clean the deck

Everything off, gaps cleared, cleaner applied, scrubbed, rinsed, brightened if needed.

Step 3 — Let it dry and check with a meter

Two or three dry days typically. Test several boards, including shaded areas. Below about 15% before you go further.

Step 4 — Punch every proud nail and screw

Walk the whole deck. Any fastener sitting above the surface will shred your abrasive instantly and can damage a hired machine. Punch nails below the surface and drive screws down. This is the step people skip and immediately regret.

Step 5 — Replace or refix damaged boards

Do this now, before sanding, so replacements get sanded and finished with everything else.

Step 6 — Sand the field at 60 or 80

Work along the boards, with the grain. Keep the sander moving and let its weight do the work. If the deck is only mildly weathered, start at 80 and you may need nothing else.

Step 7 — Do the edges and gaps

The machine will not reach right to the edge of each board or into the gaps. Hand sand or use a detail sander where needed.

Step 8 — Sand the rails, posts and steps

These get touched by hands, so splinters matter more here than anywhere. See the next section.

Step 9 — Clean up thoroughly

Sweep and then blow or vacuum the dust out of the gaps between boards. Dust left in the gaps washes out later and streaks your fresh finish.

Step 10 — Check moisture one more time

Sanding does not add moisture, but if there has been dew or a shower since you cleaned, check again before sealing.

Step 11 — Apply your stain or sealer

Follow the product instructions. Work in the shade or on an overcast day, apply thin and even, and wipe off any excess that has not soaked in within the stated time. Puddled finish stays sticky and attracts dirt.

💡 Time it properly: Sand and seal within a couple of days of each other. Freshly sanded timber left exposed starts weathering again quickly — UV begins degrading the surface within days, and a rain shower undoes your drying. Do not sand the deck and then leave it for three weeks.

Rails, Steps and Awkward Bits

The deck surface is the big job. The rails are the fiddly one, and they matter more than people expect because hands touch them. A splinter from a handrail is far more likely than one from the floor.

Handrails: sand the top surface and both sides at 80. Pay attention to the underside of the rail where hands wrap around it. A sanding sponge follows the shape well.

Balusters and spindles: slow work. A detail sander or a folded sanding sponge is best. If they are turned or shaped, a sponge follows the profile far better than any flat pad.

Steps: these take the heaviest wear on a deck. Sand the treads at 80 and check for any board that flexes underfoot. The front edge of each tread wears most — sand it enough to remove splinters but do not round it over completely, since a defined edge helps people judge the step.

Around posts: a detail sander gets into the corner where post meets deck. If you cannot reach, hand sand with folded paper. Water sits in these corners, so getting the finish in properly matters.

Sealing and Staining Afterwards

The sanding is only worthwhile if you protect the wood afterwards. Bare timber left exposed goes grey again within months.

Penetrating oil-based stains soak into the wood and are the most common deck choice. They fade rather than peel, which makes maintenance much easier — you clean and recoat rather than strip.

Water-based stains have improved considerably and offer good UV protection with easier cleanup and lower odour.

Film-forming products like deck paint or solid stain give the most colour and the most protection, but when they eventually fail they peel — and then you are back to stripping.

Whatever you choose:

  • Apply thin coats. Thick coats do not soak in, they sit on the surface and stay tacky.
  • Work two or three boards at a time, along their full length, to avoid lap marks where wet meets dry.
  • Avoid direct hot sun — it flashes the finish off before it can penetrate.
  • Do the gaps and board edges, not just the tops. That is where water gets in.
  • Respect the cure time before putting furniture back.
⚠️ Oily rags are a genuine fire risk. Rags soaked in oil-based deck stain can spontaneously combust as the oil cures — this causes real house fires every year. Never leave them in a pile or a bin. Spread them flat outdoors on a non-flammable surface until fully dry, or seal them in a metal container with water.

A Note on Composite Decking

If your deck is composite — wood fibre mixed with plastic — do not sand it.

Sanding composite boards removes the manufactured surface layer, exposes the plastic-and-fibre core, and leaves a patch that looks permanently different and cannot be restored. Most manufacturers explicitly void the warranty if you sand.

For composite, clean with a product made for it and follow the manufacturer’s guidance. Some brands have specific repair advice for scratches. If you are unsure whether your boards are timber or composite, check the underside or a cut end — composite has a uniform texture throughout with no natural grain.

Do a test patch in a corner

Sand a small area, let it dry, and try your stain there. You learn the colour and the absorption before committing to the whole deck.

Use knee pads or a sanding pole

A deck is a large area at ground level. Your knees and back will thank you, and comfortable working means more consistent results.

Keep a spare board or two

If you replace boards, keep offcuts. Matching timber later is surprisingly hard once it has weathered.

Clean the gaps every year

Most deck rot starts in the gaps where debris holds moisture against the wood. Ten minutes annually adds years to the deck.

Recoat before it fails

A penetrating stain that is refreshed while still working needs only a clean and a coat. One left until it has fully weathered off means sanding the whole deck again.
