Sanding a wood floor is the highest-reward job in home DIY. A grey, scratched, tired floor becomes something that genuinely transforms a room. It is also the least forgiving job in this guide, because your mistakes are permanent, large, and in the middle of the room where everyone looks.

Can Your Floor Even Be Sanded?

My honest recommendation: if this is your first floor, and it is a plain rectangular room in solid hardwood, DIY it — but hire an orbital floor sander rather than a drum sander. It is slower, but it is very difficult to damage a floor with one. Do not sand a floor finer than 120. This surprises people used to furniture work. Floors need a slightly open grain so the finish can key into the wood and wear well underfoot. Sanding to 220 gives a beautiful bare floor and a finish that peels within a year.

Preparing the Room Properly

Floor sanding produces more dust than any other DIY job. Preparation is not optional.

Step 5 — Walk at a slow, steady pace

About one foot per second, consistently. Do not speed up, slow down, or stop. If you must stop, raise the drum first.

Step 6 — Lift the drum before you stop

At the end of each run, raise the drum while still moving, then stop. Every pause with the drum down is a groove.

Step 7 — Overlap each pass

Overlap the previous pass by roughly a third to a half of the drum width. This blends the edges of each run so there are no ridges between passes.

Step 8 — Work back across the room

Complete the whole floor in one grit before changing. Then vacuum thoroughly — grit left behind will scratch during the next, finer pass.

Step 9 — Edge after each drum pass, not at the end

Use the edger at the same grit immediately after each drum pass. This keeps the perimeter and the field at the same stage, which is what prevents that visible band around the room.

Step 10 — Repeat through the grits

60, then 80, then 100 or 120. Vacuum between every grit, every time.

Step 11 — Buff to blend
