How to prepare metal for paint — degreasing, creating the right surface profile, and the primer that decides whether it lasts a decade or a season.
Painting metal is not like painting wood, and treating it the same is why so much painted metalwork fails.
Wood is porous. Paint soaks in a little and grips mechanically. Metal is not. It is a sealed, smooth, often slightly oily surface, and paint has absolutely nothing to hold on to unless you give it something.
So metal prep is really about two things:
- Getting it genuinely clean. Oil and grease defeat every primer ever made, and metal arrives coated in it from manufacturing, handling and the air.
- Creating a surface profile. You want fine, consistent scratches — a “key” — for the paint to lock into. Counterintuitively, polished metal is worse for paint than scratched metal.

Why Paint Fails on Metal
Four causes, and almost every failure is one of them.
1. Contamination
Oils from manufacturing, hand grease, silicone from polish, road film. Metal shows none of this visually and it defeats adhesion completely. This is the biggest single cause.
2. No surface profile
A smooth, shiny surface gives paint nothing to grip. Primer needs microscopic scratches to key into.
3. Rust or mill scale left underneath
Rust keeps spreading beneath paint. Mill scale — the blue-grey flaky oxide layer on hot-rolled new steel — looks solid but flakes off over time, taking your paint with it.
4. Wrong primer for the metal
Galvanised, aluminium and stainless all reject ordinary primers. Each needs specific chemistry.
On wood, sanding makes a surface smooth. On metal, sanding makes a surface grippable. Polishing metal before painting is actively counterproductive.

The magnet test sorts most of this out in seconds. Steel and galvanised steel are magnetic; aluminium is not; stainless varies but usually feels weaker than mild steel.
Degreasing Comes First
This is the step people do last, or skip. It should be first — and then repeated.
Why before sanding: if you sand a greasy surface, the abrasive drags contamination across the metal and grinds it into the scratches you are creating. You end up with grease sitting in exactly the profile the primer needs to grip.
Why after sanding too: sanding brings embedded oil to the surface, and your hands add more while you work.
What to use:
- A dedicated wax and grease remover — the automotive product, and the most reliable choice.
- Isopropyl alcohol — good and widely available.
- Detergent and water, then dried thoroughly — acceptable on heavily soiled items as a first pass.
Technique matters: use two cloths. One wet with solvent to dissolve the contamination, one dry immediately behind it to lift it off. Wiping with a single cloth just spreads it around and lets the solvent evaporate leaving the oil behind.
The Surface Profile You Are Aiming For
This is the part that surprises people coming from woodwork.
You are not trying to make metal smooth. You are trying to give it a consistent, uniformly dull, finely scratched surface. Paint locks into those scratches mechanically.
What “done” looks like:
- The whole surface is uniformly matt. No shiny patches anywhere — those are the spots where paint will lift first.
- The scratches are consistent in direction and depth, not a mix of gouges and polished areas.
- It feels slightly toothy rather than slick.
What you are not aiming for:
- A polished finish. Sanding metal to 400 grit and beyond makes it too smooth for good adhesion.
- Deep gouges. Very coarse scratches telegraph through the paint film.
For most painted metalwork, 80 to 180 grit is the whole useful range. That is coarser than you would ever finish wood at, and it is correct.

Abrasive choice matters on metal. Aluminium oxide is the general-purpose default. Zirconia lasts far longer on steel because it self-sharpens. Silicon carbide suits non-ferrous metals and wet work. Non-woven abrasive pads are excellent for keying without removing much material.
One important warning: do not use the same abrasive on aluminium or stainless that you have used on mild steel. Embedded steel particles transfer across and cause rust spots on metals that would otherwise never rust. Keep separate discs and pads.
Step by Step, Start to Finish
Step 1 — Identify the metal
Magnet test, look for zinc spangle, check for rust. This determines your primer.
Step 2 — Wash and degrease
Two-cloth method. Remove all oil, road film and old polish before any abrasive touches it.
Step 3 — Remove rust, scale and failed paint
Flap disc, wire wheel or abrasive as needed. On new hot-rolled steel, remove the mill scale — it will flake off later and take your paint with it.
Step 4 — Feather the edges of any remaining paint
Taper them at 120–180 so there is no step where old paint meets bare metal. A ridge shows clearly through the finish.
Step 5 — Key the whole surface
80–120 on bare metal, 180–220 on sound existing paint. Work until it is uniformly matt.
Step 6 — Blow off and vacuum the dust
Get into every corner, seam and weld. Dust left behind sits under the primer.
Step 7 — Degrease again
Fresh solvent, two cloths, gloves on. This removes the oils sanding brought up and anything your hands added.
Step 8 — Prime immediately
Same day, ideally within a couple of hours. Bare steel flash rusts in humid air faster than people expect, and aluminium re-oxidises within minutes.
Step 9 — Sand primer lightly at 320 if needed
Only if the primer surface is rough or you want a smoother topcoat.
Step 10 — Two thin topcoats
Thin coats cure harder than thick ones. Respect recoat windows on the tin.
Galvanised Metal — the Special Case
Galvanised steel deserves its own section because it defeats more paint jobs than any other metal.
Galvanising is a zinc coating applied to protect steel from rust. It works extremely well — and paint does not stick to it. New galvanising is smooth, slightly oily from the process, and chemically unfriendly to ordinary primers. Paint applied straight onto it can often be peeled off in sheets.
What actually works:
- Let it weather if you can. Galvanising that has been outdoors for six months or more develops a dull, slightly rough oxide layer that paint grips far better than new zinc.
- Degrease thoroughly. New galvanised often carries oil from manufacturing.
- Key it lightly. An abrasive pad or 180–220 grit to dull the surface. Do not sand through the zinc — that removes the corrosion protection you are trying to keep.
- Use the right primer. A dedicated galvanised metal primer, or an etch primer. This is not optional.
- Never use an alkyd or oil-based paint directly on zinc. Zinc reacts with the oils and causes saponification — the paint turns soapy and lifts.
Aluminium and Stainless
Aluminium
Aluminium forms an oxide layer within minutes of being sanded — that is why it does not rust, and also why paint struggles. It is smooth, passive and unhelpful.
- Key with an abrasive pad or 180–220 grit.
- Prime immediately — this is not a “leave it until tomorrow” surface.
- Self-etching primer is the standard answer. It contains a mild acid that bites into the surface chemically as well as mechanically.
- Use abrasives that have not touched steel, or you will embed steel particles that rust.
Stainless steel
Very smooth, very passive, and genuinely difficult to paint. Key it thoroughly with an abrasive pad, degrease meticulously, and use a self-etching or dedicated stainless primer. Even then, adhesion is never as good as on mild steel — consider whether it needs painting at all.

Zinc-rich primers are worth knowing about for exterior steel. The zinc particles corrode preferentially, protecting the steel beneath even if the film is scratched. On gates, railings and outdoor structures they are genuinely worth the extra.
