The Zinc Stearate Problem
Here is the detail that catches people out, and it is worth understanding properly.
Many sanding sealers contain zinc stearate — a soap-like powder added specifically to make the dried film sand into a fine dust instead of gumming up. It is what makes sanding sealer so pleasant to sand.
The catch: stearate is essentially a lubricant. It is slippery by nature. Leave too much of it on the surface, or build up several coats of a heavily stearated sealer, and you can create a layer that your topcoat does not bond to properly.
The consequences show up later rather than immediately — a finish that chips at an edge, peels in a sheet when knocked, or lifts around a scratch.
How to use sanding sealer safely:
- Use one thin coat, not three. It is a base, not a build coat.

Applying sanding sealer

Grain filler

Pre-stain wood conditioner

Grey primer under a dark colour, or primer tinted toward your finish shade, means fewer topcoats for full coverage.
Always test the whole stack
