Laminate cannot be sanded at all — the “wood” is a printed image under a wear coating. Sanding goes straight through to a grey substrate.
Engineered floors are the risky one because they look identical to solid wood from above. The wear layer can be anywhere from a generous 4–6mm down to under 1mm. A drum sander removes more than that in a single pass. If you cannot confirm the thickness, do not use an aggressive machine.

The pattern is simple: the aggressive machine is only for genuinely uneven floors. Most floors people want to refinish are flat and just look tired, and for those the gentle route gives an excellent result with far less risk.

The orbital floor sander is the underrated option. Hire shops rent them alongside drum sanders, they are far more forgiving, and for a floor that is flat but has a worn finish they do an excellent job. The edger is not optional if you rent either floor machine. Neither reaches within a few inches of the walls. Skipping it leaves an obvious untouched border.

Start with the finest grit that will do the job. Test a small area at 80. If it takes the finish off at a reasonable rate, stay there — you will remove far less wood and the floor will thank you in twenty years when someone sands it again.

Screening — The Option People Miss
