Step by Step, Start to Finish

Step 1 — Strip the carpet and remove every fixing

As covered above. Do not rush it. This stage protects everything that follows.

Step 2 — Set up dust containment

Seal top and bottom, tape vents, close doors, connect extraction, mask up.

Step 3 — Fix the structure

Screw down loose treads, deal with squeaks, and replace anything split. Do this now — you cannot do it after finishing.

Step 4 — Fill the holes

Tack strip nail holes, staple holes, old screw holes. Slightly overfill since filler shrinks, and let it cure fully. If you are staining, mix fine sanding dust from the same timber with a little glue to make filler that matches far better than anything from a tube.

Detail sander into the corner where tread meets riser, and where tread meets stringer. Folded paper for the last few millimetres.

Step 7 — Hand sand the nosings

Step 8 — Sand the risers

If painting them, key at 180 — no need to strip. If staining, take them through the same grit sequence as the treads.

Step 9 — Do the balusters, handrail and newel posts

Sponges and folded paper. Slow but not difficult. Pay most attention to the handrail, since hands go there.

Step 10 — Step up through the grits everywhere

Vacuum between every grit. Finish at 180 or 220 consistently across every surface that will be stained.

Step 11 — Vacuum, then vacuum again

Stairwells trap dust on every ledge, in every corner and along the stringers. Vacuum top down, then wipe with a tack cloth.

Nosings, Spindles and the Fiddly Bits

Nosings

The rounded front edge of each tread is the single most important detail to get right, for two reasons.

It is a design feature. Flatten it with a machine and the stair immediately looks wrong, in a way that is hard to identify but obvious.
