You pour a beautiful resin piece, it cures, and there is a drip on the edge or a dull patch on the surface. You take sandpaper to it — and now the whole thing is white, hazy and looks ruined.
It is not ruined. That haze is exactly what should happen.
Here is the key idea that makes resin finishing make sense: sanding replaces the glossy surface with thousands of tiny scratches, which scatter light and read as white. Every finer grit makes those scratches smaller. Eventually they get so small that light passes through cleanly again, and polishing takes you the rest of the way back to glass.
Sanding is not the finish. Sanding plus polishing is the finish. If you stop halfway, you get a cloudy piece — and that is where most people give up. 💡

Cure It Fully First — This Matters
This is a safety point as much as a quality one, so it comes first.
Epoxy goes through two stages. It becomes touch dry within a day or so, and it reaches full cure much later — commonly seven days, and longer in a cold workshop. Manufacturers state both times, and they are not the same number.
Why you must wait for full cure:
- Uncured epoxy is a sensitiser. Sanding resin that has not fully hardened releases partially-cured particles that can cause skin reactions and respiratory sensitisation. Once you become sensitised to epoxy, it tends to be permanent — some people have to stop using it entirely.
- Soft resin gums up. Under-cured epoxy is rubbery. It clogs abrasive into sticky balls within seconds rather than powdering off.
- You get a poor finish anyway. Soft resin deforms under the abrasive instead of being cut cleanly, so the surface never comes up properly.
If the resin feels even slightly waxy, tacky or warm-soft under your thumbnail, leave it longer. Warming the workshop speeds curing considerably — epoxy cures much more slowly below about 20°C.
Why Resin Behaves Differently
Resin is not wood, and treating it like wood causes every common problem.
It has no grain
Good news: you can sand in any direction. There is no “with the grain” to follow. On a piece that is part wood and part resin — a river table, say — you still follow the wood’s grain for the timber sections.
It softens with heat
This is the big one. Friction heat makes epoxy soften and smear rather than cut. It gums the abrasive instantly, and a gummed disc generates more heat, which softens more resin. That loop is why dry sanding resin so often goes wrong.
It shows everything
Clear resin is transparent, so scratches show from every angle and in every light. On wood a stray scratch might hide in the grain. In resin there is nowhere for it to hide, which is why skipping grits is fatal here in a way it is not on timber.
It scratches easily but polishes beautifully
Cured epoxy is fairly soft compared with glass. That means it marks readily — and it also means it responds extremely well to polishing.
On wood, sanding is the finish. On resin, sanding is the preparation and polishing is the finish. Stop after sanding and you have a cloudy object.
Resin Dust Safety
Even fully cured, resin dust deserves respect.
- Wear an N95 or better. Cured resin dust is very fine and stays airborne a long time. See dust safety.
- Wet sand wherever possible. It produces no airborne dust at all, which is the single best control.
- Wear gloves. Nitrile, not latex. Keeps resin dust and slurry off your skin.
- Eye protection. Chips of cured resin can be sharp.
- Ventilate, and vacuum rather than sweeping.
- Never burn resin offcuts or dust.
Wet Sanding Is the Default
For resin, wet sanding is not an advanced technique — it is the normal way to do it.
Water solves the exact problem resin creates:
- It carries heat away, so the resin never softens and smears.
- It floats the swarf off, so the abrasive does not clog into sticky balls.
- It gives a finer cut at the same grit, which is exactly what you want.
- It produces no airborne dust, which removes the health concern almost entirely.

The one exception: heavy levelling of a big pour or a thick drip. There, dry sanding with a machine at low speed is faster — but keep the speed down, keep it moving constantly, and switch to wet as soon as the bulk is off.
The Grit Ladder for Resin
Resin needs a longer, finer ladder than wood, and you genuinely cannot skip steps.

The most common mistake is stopping at 800 and expecting clarity. At that stage the piece looks milky, people assume they have ruined it, and they either give up or pour more resin over the top. Keep going. The transformation happens between 1500 and the polish.
Step by Step, Start to Finish
Step 1 — Confirm full cure
Check the manufacturer’s full cure time, not the touch-dry time. Press a thumbnail into a hidden edge — it should not mark at all.
Step 2 — Clean the piece
Wash off release agents, mould residue and handling oils. Any contamination gets dragged across the surface.
Step 3 — Level any high spots first
Drips, ridges and pour lines come off with 180 to 220. If they are substantial, use a machine at low speed, keep it moving, and pause often to let the surface cool. Touch the resin with your hand — if it is warm, stop.
Step 4 — Get the whole surface uniformly matt
Work at 220 until every glossy low spot has gone. This is the step people rush. A remaining shiny patch is a dip below the surrounding level, and no amount of finer sanding will bring it up — it will still be there under the polish.
Step 5 — Switch to wet sanding at 320
Soak your paper, wrap it around a backing block, keep the surface flooded. Work in straight strokes in one direction.
Step 6 — Change direction 90 degrees with each grit
This is how you know when a grit is done. When you can no longer see any scratches running the previous direction, that grit has finished its job.
Step 7 — Wipe and inspect constantly
The slurry hides everything. Squeegee or wipe with a microfibre and look at the surface from a low angle under strong light. Rinse the paper often and change the water when it goes cloudy.
Step 8 — Work up through the grits
320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000. Do not skip. It sounds like a lot, but each pass is quick because you are only removing the previous scratches.
Step 9 — Dry and assess
The piece should now have a soft satin sheen. If any deeper scratches remain visible, go back to the grit that will remove them and climb again — polishing will not hide them.

Polishing Back to Gloss
Polishing is not optional and it is not the same as sanding. It uses progressively finer abrasive compounds to reduce the remaining micro-scratches until light passes through cleanly.
By hand
Apply a plastic or automotive cutting compound to a microfibre or foam pad and work it in small circles with firm pressure. Wipe off, then repeat with a finishing polish. Hand polishing works well on small pieces — coasters, jewellery, pen blanks — and it is very controllable.
By machine
For anything larger, a polisher with a foam pad does in minutes what takes an hour by hand. Use a low speed, keep the pad moving, and keep checking the temperature. Heat is still the enemy — a polisher can soften and haze resin faster than sanding can if you dwell in one spot.
The sequence

Automotive products work extremely well on resin, because clear coat and epoxy present a similar problem. Plastic polishes made for acrylic and headlights are also excellent, particularly on small work.
River Tables and Large Pours
Large pieces bring their own problems, mostly to do with flatness and consistency.
Level first, then finish. On a river table you are usually flattening wood and resin at the same time. A router sled or a wide belt sander does the levelling; hand sanding will never get a large surface truly flat.
Watch the interface. Wood and resin sand at different rates — the resin is harder. That means a random orbital can leave the timber slightly lower than the resin, creating a subtle ridge you can feel. Use a firm backing pad, keep the sander flat, and check across the joint with a straightedge.
Follow the wood’s grain on the timber sections for the final passes, even though the resin has no grain. Scratches in wood show under finish; scratches in resin show through it.
Be realistic about the polish. Polishing a whole tabletop to a mirror is a big job, and a mirror finish on a table shows every fingerprint. Many makers sand to around 400, then apply a wipe-on finish or hardwax oil over the whole surface instead. It unifies wood and resin, looks excellent, and is far more repairable than a polished resin surface.

On that last one: if resin is still tacky well past its full cure time, the mix ratio was probably wrong and it may never cure. Sanding it is both futile and a sensitisation risk. The usual remedy is to scrape off the uncured layer with proper protection, clean the surface, and re-pour with carefully measured resin.
