What wet sanding actually does, when it beats dry sanding, which grits to use, and the one surface you must never wet sand.

Wet sanding sounds like a trick, and the first time you try it the difference is genuinely surprising. The same grit that left visible scratches dry suddenly leaves a surface that looks almost polished.

Here is what water actually does. It floats away the particles you have just cut off. On dry paper, those particles stay trapped between the abrasive and the surface, where they clog the grit and drag around making random deep scratches. Water carries them off, so only the abrasive touches the work — and the cut becomes finer, cleaner and far more even.

Water also cools the surface, which matters enormously on paint and plastic, and it means no airborne dust at all.

What Wet Sanding Actually Is

Wet sanding means using abrasive paper with water — or occasionally a light oil — as a lubricant. The paper must be made for it: wet-and-dry paper uses a waterproof backing and a waterproof glue, usually with a silicon carbide abrasive that shows up dark grey or black.

Ordinary sandpaper disintegrates when wet. The paper backing softens, the glue lets go, and the abrasive falls off within seconds. So this is not a technique you can improvise with whatever is in the drawer.

Four things happen when you add water:

  1. Swarf floats away. The removed material turns into a slurry that runs off instead of clogging the grit.
  2. The surface stays cool. No friction heat, so paint does not soften and plastic does not melt.
  3. The cut becomes finer. The same grit number leaves noticeably shallower scratches wet than dry.
  4. There is no dust. Everything ends up in the water, not in the air or your lungs.
Dry sanding cuts. Wet sanding refines. Once you pass about 400 grit, water is usually what turns “smooth” into “glossy”.
💡 Plain English: Swarf is just the material you have sanded off — paint particles, clear coat, metal dust. Trapped swarf is what causes those random deep scratches that appear when you thought you were being careful.

When to Use Each Method

The honest summary: dry sand to shape and remove, wet sand to refine and polish. Most jobs that use wet sanding start dry.

Never Wet Sand These

Getting this wrong causes damage that sanding cannot fix.

Bare wood. Water raises the grain, swells the fibres and can leave dark water stains. If you want the grain-raising benefit before finishing, do it deliberately with a barely damp cloth and let it dry fully — that is a controlled step, not wet sanding. Never soak bare timber.

MDF and particleboard. These swell permanently when wet. The edges puff up like a sponge and never return. Our guide to sanding MDF covers the right approach.

Uncured body filler. Polyester filler absorbs water, which then gets trapped under your paint and causes bubbling and rust later. Level filler dry, always.

Bare steel, unless you prime immediately. Water plus bare metal equals flash rust within minutes. If you wet sand steel, dry it thoroughly and prime the same day. See removing rust from metal.

Anything with electrics nearby, or any surface where water can get behind a panel and sit.

⚠️ The most expensive wet sanding mistake: wet sanding bare wood before staining. The grain swells, the surface goes fuzzy, and water marks soak into open pores. You then have to dry it completely and re-sand the whole piece — and dark water staining sometimes will not sand out at all.

The Right Paper and Grits

You need wet-and-dry paper — waterproof backing, waterproof adhesive, usually silicon carbide abrasive. It is typically dark grey or black, and the back says “wet or dry”.

Wet sanding lives at the fine end of the scale. Below about 320 you are still removing material, and dry paper does that faster.

The same no-skipping rule applies, and it matters even more here — at fine grits, a 1000-grit paper genuinely cannot remove 600-grit scratches. Work up in steps: 800, 1000, 1500, 2000.

You also need a backing pad. Bare fingers behind wet paper create the same dips and finger marks as dry hand sanding — and on a glossy painted surface, they show far more. Use a rubber or foam sanding block. On curves, a soft foam pad follows the shape while still spreading pressure.

How to Wet Sand, Step by Step

Step 1 — Soak the paper first

Put your sheets in a bucket of clean water for at least ten minutes, ideally longer. Soaked paper is more flexible, cuts more evenly, and lasts noticeably longer. Many people soak overnight.

Step 2 — Add a drop of dish soap

A small squirt in the bucket acts as a lubricant and helps the paper glide. Do not overdo it — a drop or two in a few litres is plenty.

Step 3 — Clean the surface thoroughly

Any grit already on the surface will be dragged across it. Wash and rinse first.

Step 4 — Wrap the paper around a backing pad

Hard rubber block for flat panels, soft foam for curves. Never sand with bare fingers behind the paper.

Step 5 — Keep the surface wet the whole time

Use a spray bottle, a sponge or a slow trickle from a hose. If it dries out even briefly, the swarf stops floating away and you get deep random scratches — exactly what you were trying to avoid.

Step 6 — Use light pressure and straight strokes

Let the paper do the work. On automotive panels, sand in straight lines in one direction, then change direction 90 degrees with the next grit. That way you can see when the previous grit’s scratches are gone.

Step 7 — Wipe and check constantly

The slurry hides your progress. Squeegee or wipe the panel regularly with a clean microfibre and look at it from a low angle. Wet sanding removes very little material, but on a clear coat there is very little to spare.

Step 8 — Rinse the paper often

Dip it back in the bucket to clear the loaded grit. Change the water when it turns cloudy.

Step 9 — Step up through the grits

Each grit removes the previous one’s scratches. Do not jump, and do not rush — this is the stage that decides the gloss.

Step 10 — Dry, inspect, then polish

Dry the surface completely and inspect under strong light. A wet-sanded finish looks dull and hazy — that is normal and correct. The gloss comes back when you machine polish with compound.

💡 The direction trick: Sand each grit at 90 degrees to the one before. When you can no longer see any scratches running the previous direction, that grit has done its job. It turns “have I sanded enough?” into something you can actually see.

Real Jobs and How to Approach Them

Removing orange peel from car paint

The classic wet sanding job. “Orange peel” is the slightly bumpy texture in sprayed clear coat. Wet sand at 1500, then 2000, then 3000, keeping everything soaked. Then machine polish with a cutting compound followed by a finishing polish. The result is a genuinely mirror-flat finish.

Be careful: clear coat is thin — often well under 2 thousandths of an inch. Sand through it and the only fix is a respray. Work lightly, check constantly, and if you are unsure, practise on a scrap panel first.

Smoothing primer before paint

Wet sand primer at 600 to 800. It levels the surface without generating dust that would then land on your fresh paint. Let it dry fully and blow out any water trapped in seams before spraying.

Between coats of varnish on wood

You can wet sand a cured finish on wood, because you are sanding the finish film, not the timber. Use 400 to 600 with plenty of water and very light pressure. Keep water away from any bare or damaged spots where it could reach the wood, and dry thoroughly before recoating.

Polishing plastic and acrylic

Perfect application. Plastic melts and smears with dry sanding because of heat. Wet sand from 400 up through 2000, then polish with a plastic polish. Scratched headlight lenses and acrylic sheets come back remarkably well.

Metal finishing

Wet sanding gives a finer finish on metal and keeps it cool, which matters on thin sections. Dry and protect immediately — bare steel will flash rust within minutes of getting wet.

Safety — Water and Power Tools

This is the part to take seriously.

Do not use an ordinary mains-powered sander for wet sanding. Water and mains electricity is a genuine electrocution risk, and it will also destroy the tool. Standard random orbital and sheet sanders are not sealed for it.

Your safe options are:

  • Hand sanding with a block — how most wet sanding is done, and perfectly adequate.
  • Air-powered (pneumatic) sanders — no electricity involved, which is why bodyshops use them.
  • Tools specifically rated for wet use, such as some wet polishers, used exactly as the manufacturer specifies with the correct residual current protection.

Other sensible precautions: wear gloves if you are sanding for long periods, since constant water softens skin; keep the slurry off your driveway if you are sanding automotive paint, because it contains the material you just removed; and mind your footing — wet floors get slippery fast.

⚠️ Never plug a standard electric sander in near standing water. If you want powered wet sanding, use a pneumatic sander or a tool explicitly rated for wet work. This is not an area to improvise — the risk is electrocution, not just a broken tool.

Soak your paper overnight

It genuinely cuts better and lasts longer. Keep a sealed tub of soaking sheets ready.

Change direction with every grit

The clearest way to know when a grit is finished — no old-direction scratches left.

Use a squeegee to inspect

A small rubber squeegee clears the slurry instantly so you can see the true surface without stopping to dry everything.

Keep two buckets

One for soaking clean paper, one for rinsing. It stops grit from a coarser sheet contaminating your fine paper.

Expect it to look worse before it looks better

A wet-sanded panel is dull and hazy. That is the correct intermediate state. Polishing brings the gloss back — and beyond.

💡 The habit that prevents disasters: On any painted surface, stop and wipe every thirty seconds or so. The slurry completely hides how much material you have removed, and clear coat gives you very little margin. Frequent checking is the difference between a mirror finish and a respray.
