Plaster is softer than almost anything else in this guide, and that changes the whole job.

Plaster Is Not Drywall Compound
These get treated as the same job and they are not.
Drywall compound (joint compound, mud) is applied in bands over board joints and screw heads. It is soft, it is meant to be sanded, and the surrounding surface is paper-faced board. Our guide to sanding drywall without dust covers that.
Plaster skim is a thin, continuous coat applied over the whole wall — typically 2 to 3mm — and finished by trowelling it to a polish as it sets. It is harder than joint compound when cured, and there is no forgiving layer beneath it. Sand through a skim coat and you are into the backing plaster or the board.

On drywall, sanding creates the finish. On plaster, sanding only tidies up a finish the trowel already created. Treating the second like the first is how people sand through a skim.
Does Your Wall Actually Need Sanding?
Check before you start, because the answer is often “barely”.
Sand lightly if you have:
- Fine trowel lines — the faint ridges left where the trowel edge passed.
- Small nibs and specks — bits of grit dragged through the surface.
- Splashes and drips that set proud.
- A repaired patch that sits slightly rough against the surrounding wall.
Do not try to sand out:
- Hollows and waves. Sanding removes high spots, so you would have to take the whole wall down to the level of the lowest dip. That is not realistic — those need filling or re-skimming.
- Deep trowel gouges or lines where the plaster has been dragged.
- Blown or hollow-sounding areas — tap the wall. A hollow sound means the plaster has parted from the backing and it needs cutting out.
- Widespread roughness. If the whole wall is rough, it was not finished properly and re-skimming will give a far better result than a day of sanding.
Dust Control Comes First
Plaster dust is very fine, very light and gets absolutely everywhere. It also travels through a house faster than almost any other dust because it stays airborne so long.
Set up before you sand:
- Seal the doorway with plastic sheeting and tape. A zip door keeps access practical.
- Tape over air vents and switch off central heating and air conditioning.
- Sheet the floor with plastic, taped at the edges. Plaster dust passes straight through fabric dust sheets.
- Remove or cover everything — soft furnishings hold plaster dust for months.
- Open a window with a fan blowing outward.

The pole sander is the right tool. A flat head on a swivel joint at the end of a pole lets you reach whole walls and ceilings without a ladder, and — crucially — it limits how much pressure you can apply. That is a feature on a soft surface, not a limitation.
Hand blocks suit patches and areas around sockets and edges. Sanding sponges work well for the final light pass and for corners.
Power sanders — including drywall giraffe sanders — are for large drywall jobs and can cut through a thin skim before you notice. If you use one, fit fine abrasive, keep it moving constantly, and use the lightest touch you have.
Step by Step
Step 1 — Let the plaster dry first
Sanding damp plaster clogs abrasive instantly and drags soft material out of the surface. Wait until the wall has gone uniformly pale — see the drying section below.
Step 2 — Set up dust containment
Doorways sealed, vents taped, floor sheeted, fan in the window, mask on.
Step 3 — Inspect with raking light
Hold a work light flat against the wall so the beam skims across it. Trowel lines, nibs and hollows all show. Mark problems lightly in pencil.
Step 4 — Fill hollows, do not sand around them
Any low spot needs filling with a fine filler, left to cure, then sanded flush. Trying to sand the surrounding wall down to meet a dip is how people ruin skim coats.
Step 5 — Knock off nibs and splashes
120 grit, spot work only, very light. A scraper or filling knife often removes a splash faster and with less dust than abrasive.
Step 6 — Light pass over trowel lines
150 to 180 on a pole sander, using long overlapping strokes. Almost no pressure — the weight of the head is close to enough.
Step 7 — Final light pass at 220
Only if needed. On a decent skim you may skip this entirely.
Step 8 — Check with raking light again
Stop as soon as the texture is even. Chasing perfection is what cuts through.
Step 9 — Vacuum and wipe
Vacuum the walls with a soft brush attachment, then the floor. Wipe walls with a barely damp cloth. Let the air settle before painting.
Step 10 — Mist coat, then paint

Wet Sponging Instead of Sanding
Worth knowing, because it produces no dust at all.
Plasterers often finish or repair using a damp sponge float rather than abrasive. Wiping a barely damp sponge over the surface softens and redistributes the very top layer, smoothing minor imperfections and blending patches.
Advantages: zero dust, no risk of scratching, and it works into corners and around sockets easily.
Limitations: it removes almost nothing, so it will not touch a genuine ridge or a hard nib. It also raises the surface texture slightly on some plasters, giving a very fine sandy feel rather than a polish. And too much water can soften the skim or cause it to dust when dry.
The practical combination: sponge for blending repairs and softening minor marks, abrasive for actual ridges and nibs. Many decorators do both.
Drying Time for New Plaster
This section matters more than everything above it, and it is where most plaster paint jobs go wrong.
New plaster is full of water, and it takes weeks to dry — not days. A common guideline is around a week per coat under reasonable conditions, and longer for thicker backing coats, in cold weather, or with poor ventilation. Some walls take a month or more.
How to tell it is dry: new plaster starts dark brown and gradually turns a uniform pale pink or cream as it dries. Any remaining dark patches mean moisture is still present — often around the edges, at the bottom of walls, and behind furniture, which dry last.
What happens if you paint too early:

The Mist Coat
New plaster is extremely absorbent. Apply full-strength emulsion straight onto it and the plaster sucks the water out of the paint almost instantly, before it can form a proper film. The paint sits on the surface as a weak layer and later peels off in sheets — often taking a perfect impression of the wall with it.
The fix is a mist coat: a first coat of emulsion thinned with water so it soaks in and seals the surface, giving subsequent coats something to bond to.
- Use a matt emulsion, thinned roughly 3 parts paint to 1 part water — or per the manufacturer’s guidance, which varies.
- Do not use vinyl silk or anything with additives for the mist coat. Plain contract matt is ideal.
- Expect it to look terrible. Thin, patchy and translucent is correct.

Do not chase perfection on old walls
Period properties have character in their walls. Sanding them to modern flatness is neither achievable nor usually desirable.
