MDF arrives from the merchant almost perfectly smooth. That catches people out, because the instinct is to sand it like timber — and sanding MDF like timber makes it worse, not better.
Here is the whole job in one sentence: barely touch the faces, work hard on the edges, and take the dust seriously.
MDF is wood fibre mixed with resin and pressed into a board. The faces are compressed hard and sealed by that pressing, so they are already smooth. The edges are cut open, exposing a spongy, thirsty core that drinks paint and fuzzes up. Almost every MDF finishing complaint comes down to that difference.

Why MDF Behaves Differently
MDF stands for medium density fibreboard. Wood is broken down into fine fibres, mixed with a resin binder, and pressed under heat and pressure into a flat sheet.
That manufacturing process creates two completely different surfaces on the same board:
The faces
Under pressing, the outer layers get compressed hardest and the resin forms a fairly closed, smooth skin. This is why a new sheet feels almost sanded already. Sanding through that skin is a mistake — you expose the softer, more absorbent core, and that patch will then soak up primer differently from the rest of the panel.
The edges
Cut a sheet and you open up the uncompressed middle. It behaves like a sponge: porous, thirsty, and full of loose fibre ends that stand up the moment anything wet touches them. Left untreated, a painted MDF edge ends up rough, dull and visibly different from the face.
MDF has no grain, so it will not tear out or splinter. What it has instead is a hard skin and a soft heart — and every problem comes from treating those two the same.
There is one more useful difference: because there is no grain, you can sand MDF in any direction. There is no “with the grain” to worry about, which makes it forgiving in that one respect.
MDF Dust — Read This First
This section matters more than the technique.
MDF dust is much finer than ordinary sawdust. The fibres were already broken down small during manufacturing, so sanding releases very fine particles that stay airborne for a long time and travel deep into the lungs.
It also contains the resin binder. Most MDF is bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin, and formaldehyde is classified as a human carcinogen. Modern boards emit far less than older ones, and low-formaldehyde and no-added-formaldehyde boards are widely available — but sanding still releases binder-laden dust directly into your breathing zone.
Wood dust generally is classed as a carcinogen in several jurisdictions, and MDF dust is not an exception to that.
What to actually do:
- Wear an N95 respirator or better, fitted so it seals. A loose paper nuisance mask does very little against particles this fine.
- Use dust extraction at the tool — a shop vacuum connected to the sander, not just an onboard bag.
- Work outdoors if you can, or in a well-ventilated space with a fan blowing outward.
- Vacuum, do not sweep. A broom throws settled dust straight back into the air.
- Keep children and pets out while you work and until you have cleaned up.
Sanding the Faces (Do Less)
The counterintuitive part: a new MDF face usually needs almost no sanding at all.
If the board is clean and undamaged, a very light pass with 180 to 220 grit is enough. You are just knocking off any handling marks and giving primer something to key to. Keep the pressure light and keep moving.
What you must avoid is sanding through the pressed skin. Signs you have gone too far:
- The surface starts to feel slightly fuzzy rather than smooth.
- It looks marginally lighter or duller than the surrounding area.
- Primer soaks into that patch and dries flat while the rest stays even.
If it happens, the fix is to seal that area — prime it, let it dry, sand very lightly at 220, and prime again until it matches.
When faces do need real sanding: filler patches over screw holes, repaired dents, or a previously painted board being redecorated. In those cases work at 150, then 180, and keep the transition feathered so there is no step.
Sanding and Sealing the Edges
This is where MDF projects are won or lost. An unsealed edge absorbs several times more paint than the face, dries rough and fuzzy, and stays visibly duller no matter how many coats you apply.
The process that actually works:
- Sand the edge smooth at 150, then 180. You are levelling the saw marks, not shaping.
- Seal it. Apply your chosen sealer generously — the edge will drink it.
- Let it dry fully. Rushing this undoes the whole point.
- Sand lightly at 220. The sealer will have raised the loose fibres and locked them upright; this pass shears them off.
- Seal again if the edge still looks thirsty. Two coats is normal on a freshly cut edge.
- Final light sand at 220, then prime and paint as normal.
That “seal, sand, seal” cycle is the whole trick. The first coat is sacrificial — it soaks in and stands the fibres up so you can cut them off. The second coat sits on a closed surface and stays put.

Step by Step, Start to Finish
Step 1 — Set up for dust
Respirator on, shop vacuum connected to the sander, ventilation open, and ideally work outdoors. Do this before the first pass, not after you notice the haze.
Step 2 — Fill screw holes and damage
Use a fine filler and slightly overfill, since most shrink. Let it cure fully.
Step 3 — Level the filler at 150
Sand just the patch, feathering the edges into the surrounding face. Do not sand the whole panel to blend it — you would only cut through the skin.
Step 4 — Sand the cut edges at 150, then 180
Use a hard sanding block to keep the edge square. A flexible pad rounds the corner over, which looks unintentional on cabinetry.
Step 5 — Give the faces a light 220 pass
Light and quick. You are keying, not levelling.
Step 6 — Vacuum everything thoroughly
Panel, bench, floor. No damp cloths on raw MDF — vacuum and a dry brush only.
Step 7 — Seal the edges
Apply generously. Let it dry completely.
Step 8 — Sand the sealed edges at 220
Very light. You are removing the raised fibre ends, not the sealer.
Step 9 — Second seal coat on the edges
Then another light 220 pass once dry. The edge should now feel as smooth as the face.
Step 10 — Prime the whole piece
Faces and edges together, so everything ends up with the same surface.
Step 11 — Light sand the primer at 220 or 320
This is the step that gives a properly flat topcoat. Wipe off with a dry microfibre or a tack cloth.

Which Sealer to Use on Edges
There are several options and they are not equal.
Shellac-based primer is the strongest all-round choice. It dries very fast, seals the porous fibres properly rather than soaking away, and blocks any resin bleed. It is what most cabinetmakers reach for.
Drywall joint compound, thinned and wiped into the edge, physically fills the open fibres. Cheap and genuinely effective, but it adds a step of sanding and is easy to overdo.
Diluted PVA glue is the classic budget method — roughly one part glue to one part water, brushed on. It works, but it can raise fibres badly and dries slowly. Sand carefully after.
Wood filler thinned to a paste and wiped along the edge fills and seals at once. Good for edges that will be very visible.
Standard water-based primer is the weakest option on raw edges. It soaks straight in and raises the fibres without sealing much, so you end up applying three or four coats to achieve what shellac does in two.

Routed Profiles and Shaped Edges
MDF routes beautifully — no grain means crisp, clean profiles in any direction, which is exactly why it is used for shaker doors and decorative mouldings.
But a routed profile exposes even more of the soft core, and it does so in a shape a flat sanding block cannot follow. Two things help:
- Use sanding sponges for the profile. They flex to the shape while spreading pressure evenly. Fingers alone leave dips.
- Expect to seal more. A routed profile often needs three sealing coats where a flat edge needs two, because you have opened up more core.
Work the profile at 180, seal, sand at 220 with a sponge, seal again, and check by running a fingertip along it. If it feels even slightly rough anywhere, seal that spot again rather than sanding harder — sanding harder just opens more fibres.
Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
Mistake 1 — Sanding the faces too much
What happens: you cut through the pressed skin and expose absorbent core, which then primes unevenly.
The fix: light 220 pass only on undamaged faces. If you have gone through, prime, sand lightly, and prime again until it matches.
Mistake 2 — Not sealing the edges
What happens: rough, dull edges that stay visibly different from the faces however many coats you apply.
The fix: seal, sand at 220, seal again before priming.
Mistake 3 — Using coarse grit
What happens: 80 or 100 grit tears the fibre surface open and makes it fuzzier.
The fix: stay at 150 and finer on MDF.

What happens: permanent swelling that no sanding recovers.

Score before cutting to reduce edge damage
Less damage at the cut means less sanding and sealing afterwards.
