You can remove scratches and smooth edges on glass — but the process is nothing like sanding wood. Here is how it actually works.

The fingernail test: run a nail across the scratch. If it catches, the scratch is deep enough that removing it means removing a meaningful thickness of glass around it — which leaves a visible dished distortion, often worse than the original mark.

⚠️ Never sand tempered or toughened glass. Its strength comes from compressive stress in the surface layer. Grinding into that layer can cause the whole panel to shatter, sometimes not immediately. Which Sandpaper to Use

Not all abrasive works on glass. The material and the backing both matter.

Why It Must Be Wet

Water is not optional in glass sanding, and it does three separate jobs.

  1. It carries away heat. Friction on glass builds heat quickly, and glass responds badly to thermal stress — it can crack without warning. Water keeps temperatures down.
  2. It flushes away the swarf. Glass sanding produces a fine slurry. Left in place it clogs the abrasive instantly and the paper stops cutting.
  3. It suppresses the dust. Dry glass dust is a genuine respiratory hazard — fine, sharp particles you should not be breathing. Water keeps it in suspension.

Practically, that means working with the piece in a shallow tray of water, under a slow-running tap, or with a spray bottle in your other hand keeping everything wet. Rinse the paper frequently as the slurry builds.

Do not skip grits. On wood a skipped grit costs you time; on glass it can cost you the piece, because deep scratches from a coarse stage will not come out at a fine one and you end up going back to the beginning.

Change direction between grits. Work in one direction for one grit, then perpendicular for the next. When the previous grit’s scratches have all disappeared, that stage is complete — it is a clear visual signal rather than guesswork.

Polishing — The Step People Skip

This is the single most important thing to understand, and it is why most glass sanding attempts end in disappointment.

Abrasive of any grit leaves glass frosted. Even at 2000 grit the surface is covered in microscopic scratches that scatter light. It will look better than it did, but it will not look like glass. People sand to a very fine grit, see a milky finish, and conclude the technique does not work.

Clarity comes from polishing, which is a different process. Cerium oxide — a fine polishing compound — is worked against the glass with a felt pad, usually on a drill or polisher at moderate speed, with water. It does not abrade in the same way; it burnishes the surface back to optical clarity.

How the polishing stage works:

Smoothing Cut Edges

This is the most reliably successful glass sanding job, and the one worth learning properly. A freshly cut or broken edge is sharp and dangerous; a few minutes of work makes it safe and neat.

  1. Wear cut-resistant gloves and eye protection. A raw glass edge is genuinely sharp.
  2. Start around 120–180 grit wet, or a coarse diamond pad, to knock the sharpness off.
  3. Work at roughly 45 degrees to each face first, easing the two arrises, then flatten the edge itself.

  5. Step up through the grits as far as you want to go. For a functional safe edge, 400 is plenty. For a display piece, keep going and polish.

Other Materials That Sand Like Glass

The critical difference is heat: plastics melt long before glass cracks, so keep speeds low and the surface wet. Scratched acrylic responds extremely well and often comes back to near-new clarity.

Stone and tile. Diamond pads used wet are the standard approach for smoothing cut edges on tile, marble and granite. The grit ladder is the same idea, and honing and polishing compounds finish the job.
