Step 6 — Move with the grain

This matters more on a palm sander than on a random orbital, because the fixed orbit leaves a consistent pattern. Moving along the grain means any marks it does leave run in the same direction as the wood’s natural lines.

Step 7 — Keep it moving, steadily

About an inch per second, with each pass overlapping the last by half. Never let it sit still on the surface.

Step 8 — Use the corner deliberately

For inside corners and edges, guide the pad so its corner or edge does the work. Do not tilt the tool — keep the pad flat and let its shape reach in.

Step 9 — Lift off before switching off

Same rule as every sander. Take it clear, then release the trigger.

Step 10 — Vacuum, check, and step up a grit

Wipe the surface, inspect under a light held low, then reload with the next grit.

Almost ideal. The slow removal protects the thin face veneer, and the square pad reaches into the internal corners of the carcass where a round pad cannot. Work at 150 then 180.

Fine for the flat top and the square rails. Use a sponge on any turned legs, since a flat pad flattens a turning.

Keying skirting boards before repainting

The square edge gets right down to where the skirting meets the floor. One pass at 180 to kill the shine, then prime.
