How to use a benchtop drum sander — taking light enough passes, avoiding burn marks, wrapping the abrasive properly, and why it flattens wood a planer would destroy.

First, let us clear up the confusion this machine’s name causes.

A benchtop or open-ended drum sander is a woodworking machine. Abrasive is wrapped around a rotating drum, a motorised conveyor belt feeds your board underneath, and it sands the surface to a consistent thickness. Think of it as a thickness planer that uses sandpaper instead of knives.

What a Drum Sander Actually Does

A planer cuts wood with knives. A drum sander abrades it. That sounds like a small difference until you feed figured maple through both — one leaves torn craters, the other leaves a clean surface.

The honest workflow if you own both: plane rough stock close to final thickness, then finish the last fraction on the drum sander. That gives you the planer’s speed and the sander’s surface quality, and it is how most small shops work.

What It Is Genuinely Good At

Flattening glued-up panels

The classic use. When you edge-glue boards into a tabletop, the grain runs in different directions and the joints are rarely perfectly flush. A planer tears out where grain reverses. A drum sander flattens the whole panel regardless.

Figured and difficult timber

Curly maple, quilted grain, burl, interlocked mahogany — anything that tears out under a knife goes through a drum sander cleanly. For many turners and furniture makers this alone justifies the machine.

Thin stock

Planers can snatch and shatter thin boards. A drum sander will take material down to a few millimetres safely, which matters for box making, instrument work, marquetry and veneer.

Final surface preparation

Setting the Machine Up

Dust collection is not optional

Level the drum to the conveyor

The drum must be parallel to the belt across its width, or boards come out thicker on one side. Most machines have an adjustment for this. Check it by running a wide board through and measuring both edges with calipers.

Check the conveyor belt

It must track centrally and grip properly. A slipping belt means the board stalls under the drum, which burns it instantly. Clean the belt of dust and resin build-up regularly.

Set the feed rate

Many machines have variable feed speed. Faster feed means less material removed per pass and less heat. Counterintuitively, slowing the feed down is a common cause of burning rather than a solution to it.

Wrapping the Abrasive

Drum sanders use long strips of abrasive wrapped in a spiral around the drum and clipped at each end. Getting this right matters more than people expect.

  1. Cut the strip with an angled end so it starts cleanly in the clip — most machines come with a template or instructions for the angle.
  2. Fit the leading end into the take-up clip at one end of the drum.
  3. Wrap in a spiral, keeping each turn butted against the previous one without overlapping. Overlaps create a ridge that shows as a line in every board.
  4. Keep tension even as you wrap. Loose wrapping lets the abrasive shift and tear.
  5. Secure the trailing end in the second clip, trimming to fit.
  6. Spin the drum by hand to check nothing is loose or overlapping before switching on.
⚠️ Never overlap the abrasive wrap. An overlap creates a raised band that cuts deeper than the rest of the drum, leaving a visible groove down every single board you run. It also wears through at the overlap almost immediately. Butt the edges together — a small gap is far better than any overlap.

Depth of Cut — the Number That Matters

This is where almost everyone goes wrong, and it is the difference between a machine that works beautifully and one that constantly burns wood.

A drum sander removes a tiny amount per pass. We are talking a fraction of a millimetre — often described as an eighth of a turn to a quarter turn of the handwheel, depending on the machine. Not a full turn. Not “a bit more to speed things up”.

Why so little? Because unlike a planer knife, abrasive does not slice cleanly. It scratches material away and converts most of the energy into heat. Take too much and the heat has nowhere to go but into the wood and the abrasive.

The practical method: lower the drum until it just touches the board, back it off slightly, then run a pass. Lower by a small increment and run again. If the motor note drops at all, you have gone too far — raise it back up.

How to Use It, Step by Step

Step 1 — Set up extraction and check the machine

Step 4 — Measure the thickest point

Set the drum just above that, so the first pass barely touches.

Step 5 — Feed the board in

Support long boards on both sides — infeed and outfeed. A board that drops as it exits causes snipe and can jam.

Step 6 — Listen to the motor

This is your primary feedback. A steady note means you are fine. A drop in pitch means the drum is loading up and you should raise it.

Step 7 — Alternate the board’s orientation

Flip the board end-for-end and face-for-face between passes. This keeps thickness even and stops one face taking all the work.

Step 8 — Lower a small increment and repeat

Step 9 — Step up through the grits

80 to 120 to 180. Each grit removes the previous one’s scratches. Take even lighter passes as the grit gets finer.

Step 10 — Clean the abrasive regularly

Beginners instinctively slow the feed down to “give it more time”, which is exactly backwards — a slower feed means the abrasive dwells longer on each spot, generating more heat and burning the wood. Burn Marks and How to Stop Them

Burning is the defining problem with drum sanders, and it has four causes. Work through them in this order.

1. Taking too much per pass

By far the most common. Halve your depth of cut and try again.

2. Feeding too slowly

Counterintuitive but real. Increase the feed rate so the abrasive spends less time on each point.

3. Loaded abrasive

Packed dust and resin stop the grit cutting, so it rubs instead — and rubbing is heat. Clean with a rubber stick or change the wrap.

4. Inadequate dust collection

Dust trapped under the drum has nowhere to go and burns. If your extraction is marginal, everything else gets harder.

Removing existing burn marks: they are usually shallow. Continue with light passes at the same grit and they sand away — but fix the cause first, or you will simply create more.
