Veneer is a thin slice of real wood glued to a cheaper substrate. It is how almost all affordable furniture gets a hardwood face — and it is the material people most often destroy with a sander.
The number that matters: modern veneer is commonly 0.5mm thick or less. Some is as little as 0.3mm. That is thinner than a business card. A random orbital sander with 120 grit can go through it in a few seconds, and once you are through, the substrate beneath is a different colour with the grain running the wrong way. Nothing fixes that.

How to Tell Veneer From Solid Wood
Check before you touch anything. It takes two minutes and it changes everything you do next.
Look at the edges
The clearest test. On solid timber, the grain pattern on the face continues around onto the edge and matches. On veneer, you will usually see a thin line where the face layer stops, and the edge is either a different material, a separate strip of banding, or a wrapped foil.
Look at the end grain
Solid wood shows genuine end grain — growth rings running through the thickness. Veneered board shows layered plywood plies, a uniform chipboard speckle, or the dense fine texture of MDF.
Look for repeating grain
Veneer is sliced from a log and laid in sequence, so you often see the same pattern mirrored or repeated across a wide panel. Solid boards do not do that. A perfectly symmetrical pattern down the middle of a tabletop is a strong veneer signal.
Look underneath and inside
Pull out a drawer, look at the underside of a top, check the back of a cabinet. Manufacturers rarely veneer surfaces nobody sees.
Look at the corners
Worn corners on veneered furniture often reveal the substrate already — a pale patch of MDF or chipboard where the veneer has rubbed through.
Solid wood forgives mistakes because there is more wood underneath. Veneer does not, because underneath is not wood at all.
How Thick Is Your Veneer?
Not all veneer is equal, and the age of the piece tells you a lot.

How to measure yours: find a spot where the veneer is already chipped or lifted — a corner, a drawer edge, the underside. Look at it closely, ideally with a magnifier, or measure with digital calipers if you have them. Even a rough estimate tells you whether you have any margin at all.
The Default Answer: Do Less
Before reaching for abrasive, work through this ladder. Each step is less risky than the one after it.
- Clean it. Mineral spirits on a soft cloth lifts decades of wax and grime. A surprising number of “ruined” veneered pieces simply look filthy.
- Revive the finish. A finish reviver softens and re-flows the existing coating, clearing haze and light scratching without removing anything.

- Chemically strip, do not sand. If the old finish genuinely must come off, a stripper removes the coating without removing any veneer at all. This is the single most important substitution in this guide.
- Sand very lightly, by hand, only to clean up residue and raised grain.

How to Sand Veneer Safely
If you have decided sanding is genuinely needed, these rules keep you out of trouble.
Rule 1 — Hand sanding only
No random orbital. No palm sander. No detail sander. Machines remove material faster than your judgement can keep up, especially at edges. This is a block-and-paper job. See hand vs power sanding.
Rule 2 — Use a block on flat areas
Bare fingers press unevenly and dig localised hollows — which on veneer means localised breakthrough. A cork or rubber block spreads pressure across the whole area.
Rule 3 — Start at 180, never coarser
On thin modern veneer, start at 220. There is no situation where coarse paper belongs on veneer.
Rule 4 — Stay away from the edges
Edges and corners are where veneer is thinnest and where any sanding block naturally tips. Work the field, then approach edges with very light pressure and the block held perfectly flat.
Rule 5 — Always with the grain
Cross-grain scratches on veneer need more sanding to remove — and more sanding is exactly what you cannot afford.
Rule 6 — Check constantly
Wipe the surface every minute or so and look at it under a low raking light. Colour change is your warning — if an area starts looking lighter, or the grain seems to change character, you are close to the glue line. Stop there.
Rule 7 — Stop early
Accept a surface that is 90% perfect rather than chasing the last 10% through the veneer. A small remaining mark is invisible under finish. A breakthrough is not.

Bubbles, Blisters and Lifted Edges
Loose veneer is extremely common on older furniture and it is repairable — often satisfyingly so. Do not sand a bubble flat; you will just sand through the top of it.
Identify what glue you are dealing with
Older furniture usually used hide glue, which is reversible with heat and moisture. That is genuinely good news. Modern furniture uses PVA or hot-melt adhesive, which is not reversible and needs fresh glue injected.
Repairing a bubble in hide glue
- Lay a slightly damp cotton cloth over the bubble.
- Press a warm iron on it for a few seconds at a time, moving slightly.
- The heat and moisture soften the old glue and the veneer relaxes back down.
- Remove the cloth and immediately weight the area flat — a caul and a heavy book, or clamps with a protective block.
- Leave it weighted until completely cool and dry.
Repairing a bubble in modern glue
- Slit the bubble with a scalpel, following the grain so the cut disappears.
- Work a little PVA underneath with a thin card or a syringe.
- Press down, wipe the squeeze-out immediately with a damp cloth.
- Cover with waxed paper so the caul does not stick, then weight or clamp flat until cured.
Lifted edges
Same principle. Work glue underneath with a thin blade, press down, clean the squeeze-out, and clamp with a block spreading the pressure. Edges take the most knocks, so this is the most common veneer repair there is.
Edges and Edge Banding
Edges deserve their own section because they cause most veneer failures.
Why edges are the danger zone: the veneer wraps or stops at an edge, so it is thinnest and least supported there. Any sanding block naturally tips as it passes over an edge, concentrating all the pressure on the corner. That is how people go through.
Iron-on edge banding — the thin strip used to cover the raw edge of veneered board — is thinner still. It is genuinely easy to sand through it at the corner in a single pass.
How to handle edges:
- Keep the block perfectly flat and let it overhang rather than tipping.
- Use 220 or finer on any edge.
- Sand along the edge, not across it.
- Trim banding with a purpose-made trimmer or a sharp chisel rather than sanding it flush — far more control.
- Accept a slightly proud edge over a sanded-through one.
If edge banding is damaged or missing, replacing it is a genuinely accessible repair. Iron-on banding comes in matching wood species, you trim it to length, apply with a household iron, trim the overhang and lightly ease the corner. It is one of the few veneer repairs that looks factory-made when done carefully.
What to Do If You Sand Through
It happens. Here are the realistic options, best first.
If the patch is small and in a low-visibility spot: touch-up markers or gel stain can disguise it. This works better under darker colours and on busy grain.
If you were going to stain: switch to paint. This is the most common real-world recovery. Painted veneered furniture looks perfectly good, and paint hides breakthrough completely.
If the piece must stay natural: a patch of matching veneer can be let in. Cut a shape with the grain running the right way, remove the damaged area to the same shape, and glue the patch in. It is skilled work but it is genuinely invisible when done well — this is what restorers do.
If it is on an edge: cover it with solid timber edging or new edge banding. This turns a mistake into a deliberate-looking detail, and it is often the neatest fix available.
If the piece is inexpensive: be honest about the economics. Re-veneering a flat-pack cabinet costs more in time and materials than the cabinet is worth. Paint it and move on.
