How Thin the Face Veneer Really Is
Plywood is built from thin layers of wood, called plies, glued together with the grain of each layer running at right angles to the one beneath. That cross-grain construction is what makes it stable and strong.
The outer layers — the face and back — are usually the thinnest of all, because they exist to look good rather than to add strength.

Sheets are usually marked with two letters, like A/B — the first is the face, the second the back. If you have A/B ply, put the A side where it shows and sand it as little as possible.

Step by Step, Start to Finish
Step 1 — Inspect the sheet first
Look along the surface under a low light. Note any mill marks, dents or patches. Often you will find the panel needs almost nothing, and knowing that stops you over-sanding out of habit.
Step 2 — Fill voids and damage
Fill open knots, edge voids and dents with a fine wood filler. Slightly overfill, since most shrink. Let it cure fully before touching it.
Step 3 — Level the filler at 150
Sand only the patch, feathering into the surrounding face. Do not sand the whole panel to blend — that is how people lose veneer everywhere.
Step 4 — Sand the face at 150 or 180

Dealing with Edges and Voids
Plywood edges show the layered construction, which some people love and others want hidden. Either way they need attention.
If you want the plies to show
Baltic birch is the classic choice here because its core is void-free and the layers are even. Sand the edge at 150 then 180 with a hard block to keep it square, then finish as normal. Expect the edge to absorb more finish than the face, since you are looking at end grain in every layer.
If you want to hide the edge
Options in rough order of quality:
- Solid timber edging — a strip of matching hardwood glued on. Best looking and most durable, and it lets you round the edge over slightly without exposing plies.
- Iron-on veneer edge banding — quick, cheap and effective. Trim flush and sand very lightly at 180 with a block held flat.
- Filler — fill the layered edge, sand flush and paint. Only really works under paint.
Filling voids
Cheaper plywood has gaps inside the core that appear as holes along a cut edge. Fill them with wood filler or epoxy before sanding, let it cure fully, then level at 150. If a sheet has voids everywhere, it is worth accepting it as a paint-grade panel rather than fighting for a clear finish.
Blotchy Plywood and How to Fix It
Plywood stains unevenly more often than solid timber, and there are two separate reasons.
The veneer is rotary cut. Most plywood face veneer is peeled from a log like unrolling a carpet, rather than sawn. That produces a wide sheet with swirling, variable grain, and those swirls absorb stain at different rates — the classic blotchy plywood look.
Glue bleed. During manufacture, adhesive can come close to the surface. Where it does, stain cannot penetrate and you get pale patches.

If it is small and in a low-visibility area: you may be able to disguise it with a touch-up marker or gel stain applied to that spot only. Works better under darker colours.
If you were planning to stain: switch to paint. This is the most common real-world fix, and painted plywood cabinetry looks perfectly good.
If the panel is visible and must be stained: replace it. Sanding the surrounding area down to match does not work, because you would have to remove the entire face veneer across the whole panel.

Mark the good face immediately
