The Grit Ceiling — Where to Stop

Which Woods Blotch, and Why

Watch out for old wax. Antique furniture often has decades of wax polish soaked into the surface. Wax blocks stain completely, and sanding just smears it deeper. Clean with mineral spirits and a rag first, changing the rag frequently, until it comes away clean.

Check the wood is really solid. Many older pieces are veneered. If your “solid oak” dresser turns out to be a thin veneer, sanding aggressively will go straight through. Check the edges before you commit.

How to Sand Furniture for Stain, Step by Step

Step 1 — Clean the piece thoroughly

Wash off grease, wax and old polish with mineral spirits. Let it dry fully. Sanding a dirty surface drives contamination into the grain, and contaminated grain will not take stain.

Step 2 — Remove hardware and take it apart where sensible

Drawers out, knobs and hinges off. Sanding around hardware leaves untouched rings that stain differently.

Step 3 — Strip any existing finish completely

All of it, everywhere. Check corners, mouldings and edges especially.

Step 4 — Start at the right grit

For stripped wood, 100 or 120. For bare new wood in good condition, start at 120. Do not start coarser than you need — every coarse scratch has to be removed later.

Step 5 — Work through the grits without skipping

100 → 150 → 180 is a reliable sequence. Never skip more than one step. Deep scratches from coarse paper will hold extra pigment and appear as dark lines under stain.

Step 6 — Keep the grit consistent across the whole piece

This matters more than people realise. If the top is sanded to 220 and the sides to 150, they will stain noticeably different shades. Finish everything at the same grit.

Step 7 — Sand end grain finer

Take end grain — table ends, chair legs, shelf edges — one or two grits beyond the rest. This closes those open fibres slightly and prevents the dark, almost black look end grain otherwise takes on.

Step 8 — Finish with the grain, by hand

Whatever machine you used, make the last passes by hand with the grain at your final grit. This aligns any remaining scratches with the wood’s natural lines, so stain does not highlight them.

Step 9 — Check under raking light

Low light skimming across the surface reveals swirl marks and missed patches. Fix them now — after stain, the only remedy is sanding everything back.

Step 10 — Preview with mineral spirits

Wipe the whole piece with mineral spirits. It darkens the wood exactly as stain will, showing you every flaw, glue smear and machine mark before you commit. It evaporates completely with no effect on the finish. This is the most valuable ten minutes in the whole project.

  1. After your final sanding grit, wipe the whole piece with a cloth barely damp with clean water.
  2. Let it dry completely — an hour or two, longer in humid weather.
  3. Feel the surface. It will be noticeably rougher.
  4. Sand very lightly at your final grit — not coarser — just enough to knock the raised fibres off.
  5. Dust off. The grain cannot rise again, because you have already cut it.
