What not to use: a belt sander on anything except a badly cupped solid tabletop. On furniture it removes too much, too fast, and veneer is often under a millimetre thick.

The most important decision is not which sander. It is whether the piece is solid wood or veneered — because that changes everything about how you approach it.

Furniture refinishing is where a lot of good pieces get ruined. Not by bad taste, but by a belt sander meeting a veneered sideboard, or by someone sanding an antique to bare wood and destroying its value in an afternoon.

The tools themselves are not complicated. What matters is knowing what you are sanding, how much you can safely remove, and when to stop and use a chemical stripper instead. This guide covers all three.

Check This Before You Sand Anything

Three questions, and they take two minutes to answer. Getting them wrong is what turns a restoration into a repair.

1. Is it solid wood or veneer?

Look at the edge of a tabletop or the end of a panel. On solid wood, the grain on the face continues round onto the edge. On veneer, you will see a thin layer with a distinct line beneath it, or a banding strip glued on to hide the substrate.

This matters enormously. Solid wood can be sanded repeatedly over decades. Veneer often gives you exactly one careful refinish before you go through it.

2. Is it valuable or antique?

If the piece is genuinely old or possibly collectible, stop. Original finish and patina are a large part of an antique’s value, and sanding it off is irreversible. Get it looked at before you touch it. Plenty of pieces are worth more tired and original than they are freshly sanded.

3. What is the existing finish?

Shellac, lacquer, varnish, polyurethane and paint all behave differently. Test in a hidden spot: shellac dissolves with denatured alcohol, lacquer with lacquer thinner. If it dissolves, chemical stripping will be far easier and safer than sanding — especially on veneer and detail.

The belt sander question: mostly no. There is one legitimate use — flattening a genuinely cupped or badly damaged solid wood tabletop — and even then a hand plane or a random orbital with coarse grit is usually safer. On veneer, on legs, or on anything delicate, a belt sander will do damage faster than you can react.

Veneer — The Rule That Saves Pieces

Most furniture made after about 1950, and a great deal made before it, is veneered. Modern veneer is frequently 0.5mm or thinner — about the thickness of a business card. Older veneers can be thicker, but you cannot rely on it.

How to work on veneer without going through:

  1. Strip chemically wherever possible. Removing finish with stripper rather than abrasive takes no wood off at all. On veneer this is the single best decision you can make.
  2. If you must sand, start at 150 or 180 — never 80 or 100. You are smoothing, not shaping.
  3. Lowest speed setting.
  4. Absolutely no pressure. Let the tool float.
  5. Never dwell. Keep moving constantly.
  6. Stay off the edges. Veneer is thinnest and least supported at edges and corners — this is where nearly every burn-through happens.
  7. Check constantly. A slight colour change is your warning that you are into the glue line. Stop immediately.

Once you sand through veneer, there is no fix short of patching in new veneer or painting the piece. It is worth being genuinely cautious.

⚠️ Edges are where veneer dies. A random orbital tipping slightly onto the edge of a tabletop concentrates all its cutting into a few millimetres of the most vulnerable veneer on the piece. Keep the pad flat and let it overhang no more than about a third.

Legs, Spindles and Carved Detail

No powered sander follows a curve properly. Turned legs, spindles, mouldings and carving are hand work, and trying to force a flat pad onto them flattens the detail you are trying to preserve.

What actually works:

  • Sanding sponges. Flexible, they follow a curve, and they come in grits. The single most useful thing for chair legs.
  • Strips of abrasive used like a shoeshine cloth. Wrap a strip around a turned leg and pull it back and forth. Fast and it follows the profile exactly.
  • Shaped blocks. A dowel wrapped in paper for coves, a scrap of wood shaped to match a moulding for repeated profiles.
  • Chemical stripper. On carving, stripper plus a brass brush and picks removes finish from detail that no abrasive could reach without destroying the crispness.
  • Steel wool or abrasive pads for final smoothing on curves, especially between coats of finish.

Accept from the start that detail work is slow. A chair with four turned legs and stretchers will take longer than the entire tabletop. Rushing it with a power sander is how spindles end up with flat spots.

Stop at 220. Sanding bare wood finer than that burnishes the surface, closes the pores, and causes stain to sit on top unevenly instead of soaking in. When to Strip Instead of Sand

Chemical stripping is underrated by beginners and relied on heavily by professionals, for one simple reason: it removes finish without removing wood.

Strip rather than sand when:

  • The piece is veneered — this is the big one
  • There is carving, turning or moulding that abrasive cannot follow
  • The existing finish is thick, or there are many layers
  • The piece has any age or value worth preserving
  • The finish gums up sandpaper immediately (typical of old varnish and shellac)

Sand rather than strip when:

  • The piece is solid wood with a thin, hard finish
  • You need to level damage, dents or water rings as well as remove finish
  • The surfaces are flat and simple

The usual professional approach is both: strip the finish chemically, neutralise and let it dry fully, then sand lightly at 150–180 to smooth the raised grain before finishing. That gets a clean surface with the minimum wood removed.

Common Mistakes and Fixes

1. Belt sander on a veneered top

Result: through the veneer within seconds, substrate exposed, piece ruined.
Fix: never. Use a random orbital on low speed, or strip chemically.

2. Sanding an antique to bare wood

Result: original patina destroyed and value potentially gone.
Fix: check before you start. Some pieces should only be cleaned and waxed.

3. Starting too coarse

Result: deep scratches that take longer to remove than the finish did.
Fix: 120 on solid wood, 150–180 on veneer. Coarse grit is for damage, not finish.

4. Tipping the sander on edges

Pro Tips

  • Raise the grain before the final sand. Wipe the bare wood with a damp cloth, let it dry, then sand lightly at your final grit. The fibres that would have lifted under a water-based finish are removed in advance.
  • Work in daylight, or use a raking light. Hold a light almost parallel to the surface — every scratch and ripple appears instantly. Overhead light hides everything.
  • Test your stain on the underside. Every piece of wood takes colour differently, and the underside of a tabletop is the perfect test area.
  • Keep the drawers and doors labelled. Sand them off the carcass, but mark which is which — they are rarely interchangeable.
  • Fill after the first sanding, not before. Filler shows up more clearly once the finish is off, and you will find dents you could not see.
  • Vacuum the piece, then tack cloth it. Dust in a finish is the most common last-minute disappointment.
  • Do not sand hardware. Remove handles, hinges and escutcheons first. Sanding around them leaves a visible halo.

Real-World Examples

The sideboard that went through in one pass

A common and painful one. Someone starts on a mid-century sideboard with a random orbital and 80 grit, working on the flat top. Within a minute a pale patch appears — that is the glue line under a 0.6mm veneer. There is no recovery short of re-veneering or painting. Starting at 180 on a low speed would have removed the finish over a few more minutes with the veneer intact.

The dining chairs that took longer than the table

Four chairs with turned legs and stretchers genuinely take longer than a six-seat tabletop, because almost none of it can be machine sanded. People underestimate this badly and then rush, leaving flat spots on the turnings. Stripper plus sponges is the faster route, not a power tool.

The pine dresser that went blotchy

Sanded beautifully to 320, then stained — and the colour came out patchy and pale in places. Pine absorbs unevenly, and sanding that fine closed the surface further. Stopping at 180 and using a pre-stain conditioner produces a far more even result.
