How to Sand a Door: Panels, Edges and the Bit Everyone Skips

How to sand a door properly — panels and mouldings, the sticking-door fix, why the top and bottom edges matter more than you think, and what to do about hollow-core veneer.

Doors are the most commonly refinished thing in a house, and the most commonly botched. Not because the sanding is difficult — it is not — but because most people try to do it with the door still hanging.

Take the door off and lay it flat. That single decision fixes half the problems in this guide. You can reach every edge, gravity stops paint running, and you are not sanding above your head with the door swinging away from you.

There is one more thing worth knowing before you start, because almost nobody does it: the top and bottom edges of most doors are never sealed. Those bare edges soak up moisture from the air, which is the main reason doors swell, stick and warp. While the door is off, sealing them takes five minutes and prevents years of trouble. ✅

Know What Kind of Door You Have

This decides how much sanding the door can survive. Get it wrong and you can ruin a door in seconds.

Solid timber panelled door

A frame of stiles and rails with panels set into it. The most forgiving type — it is solid wood throughout, so you can sand it repeatedly over its life. These are the doors worth restoring properly.

Solid core flush door

A flat door with a solid core, usually faced with a thin veneer. The veneer is the catch. It is often under a millimetre, so it behaves exactly like plywood — sand through and there is no repair.

Hollow core flush door

A cardboard honeycomb inside a thin frame, faced with very thin veneer or hardboard. These take the least sanding of all. The facing is barely thicker than paper in places, and there is no material underneath to fall back on. Light keying only.

Exterior door

Usually solid, and it has been weathered on one side. Expect the outside face to need far more work than the inside, and expect to find failing finish rather than sound finish.

If a door is fire rated — common on doors between a house and an integral garage, and on flats and rental properties — heavy sanding or planing can compromise its certification. Check the label on the hinge edge before you take material off. Repainting is normally fine; reshaping is not.

Taking It Off and Laying It Flat

Twenty minutes of setup that saves hours of awkwardness.

  1. Wedge the door slightly open with a shim under the bottom edge so it does not drop as you free the hinges.
  2. Unscrew the hinges from the frame, not the door, if the door will go back in the same place. It preserves the alignment.
  3. Bag and label the screws. Doors and their hardware get separated far too easily.
  4. Remove handles, escutcheons and the latch if you can. Sanding around hardware leaves an untouched glossy halo that peels first.
  5. Mark the top in pencil somewhere it will be hidden. Doors are rarely symmetrical and rehanging one upside down is a genuinely common mistake.
  6. Lay it across two sawhorses at a comfortable height. Padding on top protects the face you are not working on.

Working horizontally is not just about comfort. Paint and varnish self-level far better on a flat surface, so runs and sags mostly stop happening. You will get a better finish for less effort.

✅ If you truly cannot take it off: wedge it firmly open so it cannot swing, and accept that the top edge, bottom edge and hinge edge will not get done properly. That is a compromise, not a plan — and those unsealed edges are exactly the ones that cause swelling later.

Do You Need to Strip It?

Usually not, and stripping unnecessarily is how a weekend becomes a fortnight.

Just key it if the existing finish is sound — no flaking, no bubbling, no peeling. Scuff with 180 grit until the shine is uniformly dull, then prime and paint. This covers most interior doors.

Spot repair if there are a few chips. Sand those areas back at 120, feather the edges into the sound paint so there is no ridge, then key the whole door at 180.

Strip fully if the finish is flaking widely, if there are many thick layers obscuring the mouldings, or if you are going from a dark stain to a light paint and want a clean base.

Step by Step, Start to Finish

Step 1 — Clean the door first

Doors are handled constantly, so they carry skin oils, and kitchen and bathroom doors carry more than that. Wash with sugar soap or a degreaser and let it dry. Sanding a greasy door grinds the grease into the grain, and no primer fixes that.

Step 2 — Take it off, remove hardware, lay it flat

As above. Mark the top edge.

Step 3 — Deal with failing finish and damage

Scrape off anything loose, then sand those areas at 120 and feather the edges. Fill dents and old screw holes now, slightly proud, and let the filler cure fully.

Step 4 — Level repairs at 120

Sand just the patches, blending outward in a wide oval so there is no step.

Step 5 — Sand the flat areas at 180

Use a random orbital sander on the panels and the wide rails. Keep it flat, keep it moving, no downward pressure. On a panelled door, work along the grain of each member — the stiles run vertically, the rails horizontally.

Step 6 — Do the mouldings and corners by hand

A sanding sponge follows the profile; a detail sander gets into the corners where the panel meets the frame. This is where the round pad cannot help you.

Step 7 — Sand all four edges

Hinge edge, latch edge, top and bottom. The top and bottom are the ones people skip — see the section below on why that matters.

Step 8 — Check for shiny survivors

Hold a lamp low so light skims across the door. Any remaining gloss will catch the light. Those are the spots where your new paint will peel first, so go back over them.

Step 9 — Vacuum and wipe

Vacuum the whole door including the mouldings, then wipe with a tack cloth. Dust in the grooves ends up as bumps in your paint.

Step 10 — Prime, including the edges

Use a stain-blocking primer over knots or any dark colour bleeding through.

Step 11 — Sand the primer at 220

Light pass. This is what makes the topcoat feel smooth rather than slightly rough, and it takes ten minutes.

Step 12 — Two thin topcoats

With a light 320 pass between them. Thin coats beat one thick coat every time — see sanding between coats.

The door you can see is only five of six surfaces. The one you cannot see — the top edge — is the one that decides whether the door still fits properly in three winters’ time.

Panels, Mouldings and Awkward Bits

A panelled door is really several different sanding jobs joined together.

The flat panels. Easy — random orbital, light pressure. Watch out on older doors where panels are thin and may be a different timber to the frame.

The stiles and rails. These are often narrower than a 5-inch pad. Keep the pad centred so it does not rock, and do not let it overhang both sides at once or it will round the arrises.

The mouldings around each panel. The fiddly part. A flat pad flattens a profile and leaves finish sitting in the hollows. Use a sanding sponge that flexes to the shape, or make a shaped block from an offcut to match the profile. For crisp corners where moulding meets panel, a detail sander earns its place.

The panel corners. Paint builds up here over decades. Work carefully with folded paper or a detail sander tip, and accept that on a much-painted door you will not get perfectly crisp corners back without stripping.

Glazed doors. Mask the glass with tape. Sandpaper scratches glass permanently, and a sander will touch it.

Fixing a Door That Sticks

A common reason people get the sander out in the first place. Diagnose before you remove material, because taking wood off is not reversible.

Step 1 — Find where it actually binds

Close the door slowly and watch. Or run a sheet of paper around the gap — where it will not slide through is where the door is tight. Rub chalk on the suspect edge, close the door, and the chalk transfers to the contact point.

Step 2 — Check the hinges first

Very often the door is fine and the hinges have loosened. Tighten the screws. If they spin without biting, the holes are worn — glue a wooden matchstick or dowel into the hole, let it set, and re-drive the screw into fresh material. This fixes a surprising share of sticking doors with no sanding at all.

Step 3 — Consider the season

Timber swells in humid weather and shrinks in dry. A door that only sticks in summer may fit perfectly in winter. Sand it in July and you can end up with a draughty gap in January. If the binding is seasonal, sealing the edges is a better fix than removing material.

Step 4 — Only then, remove material

Take the door off, mark the tight area clearly, and work the edge with a sander or a hand plane. Remove a little, offer the door up, check, repeat. Check far more often than feels necessary — a sander removes edge material faster than you expect.

Step 5 — Seal what you exposed

Fresh bare timber on the edge must be primed and painted, or it will absorb moisture and swell straight back.

The Edges Nobody Seals

This section is short and it is the most valuable part of the guide.

When doors are hung, the top and bottom edges are almost never painted. They are out of sight, it is awkward, and the door is already up. So they stay bare.

Bare end grain absorbs moisture from the air far faster than a sealed face. The door then swells, sticks, and over years can warp — because one part of it is taking on moisture while the rest is sealed.

While the door is off, seal all six surfaces. Both faces, both long edges, the top and the bottom. It takes five extra minutes with the door already flat and it genuinely prevents sticking, swelling and warping.

This matters most on:

  • Bathroom and kitchen doors, where humidity is highest.
  • Exterior doors — the bottom edge especially, where water sits.
  • Doors that already stick seasonally, which is usually a moisture problem rather than a size problem.

  • Let it cure, not just dry. Paint can feel dry in hours and stay soft for two to three weeks. Rehanging too early means the latch edge sticks to the frame and pulls the paint off.
  • Paint the hardware recesses before refitting hinges, but keep paint off the hinge leaves themselves — built-up paint changes how the door hangs.
  • Refit hinges to the frame in the original screw holes if you removed them from that side.
  • Check the swing before tightening everything fully.
  • Wax the latch lightly if it is stiff.

Use a nail or screw to hold it upright for edges

Sand the hinge edge lightly, if at all

Paint build-up on the hinge edge changes the door’s fit. Key it, do not build it up with heavy coats.

Check the door is flat before you finish

Sight along it. A door that has already warped will not be fixed by sanding, and it is better to know before you spend a day finishing it.
