Why You Sand Between Coats
Two separate reasons, and it helps to know which one applies to your situation.
1. Smoothness
This is the main reason, and it applies to every finish. As a coat dries, three things happen to its surface:
- Airborne dust lands on it and gets locked in as tiny bumps, called nibs.
- The wood grain raises — the first coat especially makes fibres swell and stand up, leaving a fuzzy feel.
- Brush marks and small imperfections set as the finish levels.
Sanding shears all of that off, so the next coat goes onto a flat base. Do this between every coat and the final surface is genuinely smooth to the touch.
2. Adhesion
This one is conditional. A fully cured coat of polyurethane is glossy and slick, and a new coat may not bond well to it — you get intercoat adhesion failure, where the finish peels in sheets later.
But this only matters if you have missed the recoat window. Most polyurethanes will chemically bond to themselves if you apply the next coat within a stated period — often somewhere between two and twenty-four hours depending on the product. - You are working in a clean, low-dust environment.
In practice that combination is rare outside a spray booth. Most home projects have at least a few dust specks, and the first coat on bare wood almost always raises grain.
You must not skip it when:
- The previous coat has fully cured, or you are past the recoat window.

Wait Until It Is Properly Dry

Paper or pad?
Fine sandpaper cuts flat and is the right choice on flat surfaces where you want to level brush marks. Use it wrapped around a block, and use the finest that does the job.
Non-woven abrasive pads — the maroon or grey synthetic pads — are often better between coats. They flex to follow shape, so they work on mouldings, turnings and carvings where paper cannot, and they are less likely to cut through on an edge. Many finishers use nothing else between coats.

Hand only

How to Do It, Step by Step
Step 1 — Confirm it is dry
Test sand a hidden area. Fine white powder means go. Gummy residue means wait.
Step 2 — Work in good raking light
Put a lamp low so light skims the surface. You need to see the nibs to know when they are gone.
Step 3 — Use almost no pressure
The weight of your hand is enough. You are shearing off tiny high points, not levelling a surface. If you can feel yourself pushing, ease off.
Step 4 — Sand with the grain on flat areas
Any scratches you leave will then run along the wood’s natural lines rather than across them.
Step 5 — Stop when the shine is evenly dulled

Removing the Dust Without Causing Problems
Sanding dust left on the surface becomes bumps in the next coat, so this step is not optional. But how you remove it matters, and there is a trap here.
Vacuum first
A brush attachment removes the bulk. Do the surface, then the surrounding area, then let airborne dust settle for a few minutes.
Then wipe — with the right thing
For oil-based polyurethane: a tack cloth is ideal. It is a slightly sticky cheesecloth that picks up fine particles a dry cloth would just push around.
For water-based polyurethane: be careful. Some traditional tack cloths contain waxes or oils, and residue left behind can cause fisheyes — small craters where the waterborne finish refuses to wet the surface. Either use a tack cloth explicitly stated as suitable for water-based finishes, or skip it and use a lint-free cloth barely dampened with water, followed by a dry one.

What About the Final Coat?
Normally, do not sand it. The last coat should be left as it flows out — that self-levelling is what gives you an even sheen. Sanding it dulls the surface, and you would then have to polish to restore the gloss.
So make the final coat count: clean environment, dust settled, good light, thin and even application.
The exception — rubbing out. If you want a genuinely flawless surface on a tabletop or a fine piece, finishers deliberately sand the final coat and then polish it back. That means wet sanding at very fine grits, then compound and polish, exactly like resin or automotive clear coat.
