How to tell whether a piece should be cleaned, revived or refinished — and how to sand it safely if it genuinely needs it.
Here is advice you will not get from most sanding guides: if the piece is genuinely old and genuinely good, put the sandpaper down.
An antique’s surface carries its history. The gentle darkening of the timber, the soft wear on a chair arm, the way corners have rounded from a century of hands — collectors call this patina, and it is a large part of what makes an antique an antique.
Sanding removes patina permanently, and with it a significant share of the piece’s value. A stripped and refinished Georgian chest can be worth a fraction of the same chest left alone. Restorers see this constantly, and the damage is never reversible.

Why Patina Matters
Patina is not dirt. It is the accumulated physical evidence of a piece’s life, and it is made up of several things at once:
- Colour change in the timber. Wood darkens and mellows with decades of light exposure and oxidation. This happens throughout the surface layer, not just on top — which is why sanding removes it.
- Wear in the right places. Softened edges where hands rest, worn areas in front of drawer pulls, scuffing on a chair stretcher where feet went. These patterns are logical and hard to fake.
- The aged finish itself. Old shellac and wax build a depth and warmth that new finishes take decades to develop.
- Small honest damage. Dents, minor scratches, the odd burn mark. On genuine antiques these read as character rather than defects.
You can put a new finish on an old piece in a weekend. You cannot put two hundred years of patina back — not ever, and not for any amount of money.
The practical consequence: in the antiques trade, “original surface” or “untouched” is a positive description that adds value, while “recently refinished” reduces it. A piece with a tired but original finish is usually worth more than the same piece stripped and made shiny.
Clean, Revive or Refinish?
Almost every old piece falls into one of three treatments, and most people jump straight to the third.

Work down that list, not up. Clean first and reassess. A great many pieces that look hopeless are simply filthy — decades of wax, smoke and grime — and come back beautifully with nothing more than careful cleaning.
When refinishing genuinely is the right answer:
- The piece has already been stripped or badly refinished by someone else — the original surface is gone, so there is nothing left to preserve.
- It is reproduction rather than antique, or mass-produced twentieth-century furniture with no collector interest.
- The finish is destroyed — flaking, water-ruined, or covered in modern paint.
- It is a sentimental piece you want to use and enjoy, and you have decided you value that over resale. That is a completely legitimate choice, made knowingly.
Working Out What You Have
A few quick checks tell you a lot before you commit to anything.
Look at the construction. Hand-cut dovetails are slightly irregular and often few in number; machine-cut ones are uniform and evenly spaced. Irregular saw marks, slight asymmetry between “identical” parts, and shrinkage that has made round parts slightly oval all point to age and hand work.
Look underneath and behind. The unfinished surfaces tell the truth. Original backs and drawer bottoms are often rough-sawn, oxidised to a dark grey-brown, and made from a cheaper secondary timber. Bright, clean, uniform surfaces suggest a newer piece or a replacement part.
Look at the fixings. Hand-made screws have off-centre slots and irregular threads. Cut nails are rectangular in section. Modern Phillips screws in original locations mean later work has been done.
Look at the wear. Genuine wear is logical — it appears where hands, feet and clothing actually touched. Artificial distressing tends to be evenly scattered and appears in places nobody would ever wear.
Look for old repairs. They are part of the history too. A neat period repair is generally not something to remove.
Start With Cleaning
Always the first step, and often the only one needed.
- Dust thoroughly with a soft brush, getting into carvings and mouldings.
- Test in a hidden area first. Inside a door, under a lid, the back of a leg. Always.
- Remove old wax and grime with mineral spirits on a soft cloth. Work a small area at a time, turning to a clean part of the cloth constantly. You will be shocked at the colour that comes off — that is decades of accumulated wax and smoke, not the finish.
- For stubborn grime, a very mild soap solution used sparingly and dried immediately can help. Keep water to an absolute minimum on antique furniture — old glue is usually hide glue, which softens with moisture.
- Reassess. Stop and look. Many pieces are done at this point.
- Wax lightly with a good paste wax if the finish is sound. Apply thinly, let it haze, buff off.
This process removes nothing original. It takes away only what has been deposited on top — and it very frequently reveals a finish that is in far better condition than it appeared.
Reviving a Finish Without Stripping
Between cleaning and refinishing sits a middle path that most people never try.
Finish revivers
Products that partially soften and re-flow an existing finish rather than coating over it. On old shellac and lacquer they can be transformative — hazy, crazed, scratched surfaces come back to an even sheen, and the original colour and patina remain. Always test in a hidden spot first, as they affect different finishes differently.
Wax
Good quality paste wax on a sound finish adds depth and protection and evens out minor scuffing. It is entirely reversible, which is exactly what restorers like about it.
Spot repairs

Reviving with alcohol on shellac

Shellac and French Polish
Most furniture made before the twentieth century was finished with shellac, often applied as French polish. Knowing this changes what you can do.
How to identify it: put a drop of denatured alcohol on a hidden area. If the finish goes sticky or dissolves, it is shellac. If nothing happens, it is likely a later varnish or lacquer.
Why this matters: shellac is reversible. Because alcohol re-dissolves it, damaged shellac can often be re-flowed and blended rather than stripped. A cloudy, scratched or crazed shellac surface can frequently be brought back with careful application of alcohol or a shellac-based reviver — no sanding, no stripping, patina intact.
This is why so much antique restoration is done with a rubber and alcohol rather than abrasives. It is a skill worth reading about properly before attempting on anything valuable, but the principle is important: on shellac, damage is usually repairable rather than terminal.
It also means shellac is vulnerable — alcohol spills, perfume and some cleaning products will mark it instantly. That is worth knowing if you are going to use the piece.
Veneer on Old Furniture
A great deal of antique furniture is veneered — and antique veneer is a different animal from modern veneer.
It is usually thicker than the paper-thin veneer on modern plywood, because it was cut by saw rather than peeled. That is the good news.
But it is also older, drier and laid with hide glue. That means it can be loose, lifted or bubbled, and it will not tolerate the moisture or heat that would be fine on solid timber.
Practical points:
- Tap gently across the surface and listen. A hollow sound means the veneer has lifted from the substrate underneath.
- Loose veneer is repairable, and often with the original glue — hide glue re-activates with heat and moisture, so a warm iron through a damp cloth can re-bond a lifted edge. This is one of the genuinely satisfying antique repairs.
- Never power sand veneer. Even thick veneer will not survive a machine, especially near an edge.
- Watch for cross-banding and inlay. Decorative borders and stringing are often extremely thin. Sanding across them removes the detail that makes the piece special.
If You Must Sand — How to Do It
So you have decided: the finish is genuinely beyond saving, the piece has no antique value to protect, or it has already been refinished by someone else. Here is how to do it with the least harm.
Rule 1 — Hand sanding only
No random orbital, no detail sander, no belt sander. Machines remove material far faster than you can judge on an old piece, and they flatten exactly the soft edges and gentle undulations that make old furniture look old. Machine-sanded antiques have a characteristic dead flatness that is instantly recognisable.
Rule 2 — Strip chemically rather than abrading

Rule 3 — Sand as little as possible
After stripping, you are cleaning up residue and raised grain — not reshaping. Start at 180, not 100. Finish at 220. If 180 is not enough, the problem is probably not one that sanding solves.
Rule 4 — Preserve the shape
Use flexible sponges on mouldings and turnings so profiles stay crisp. Never flatten a worn edge to “tidy it up” — that wear is the piece’s history and it is what stops the item looking like a reproduction.
Rule 5 — Go with the grain, always
Old timber shows cross-grain scratches badly, and old surfaces are often darker so scratches contrast more.

Trying to sand out every dent on a two-hundred-year-old piece means removing a lot of wood and ending up with something that looks new and slightly odd. Keep the honest marks.

Keep the original hardware

Work in daylight
Old surfaces have subtle colour variation. Artificial light hides it and you can easily over-work an area without noticing.
Do the least reversible thing last
Cleaning is reversible. Waxing is reversible. Reviving is mostly reversible. Stripping and sanding are not. Work in that order.

Sleep on it
If you are unsure whether to strip a piece, stop and leave it a week. Patina you keep is patina you can still remove later. Patina you remove is gone.
