How to prep laminate and melamine furniture for paint — why the primer matters more than the sanding, and how to avoid exposing the chipboard underneath.
That flat-pack wardrobe, the melamine bookcase, the shiny white cabinet — none of them are wood. They are particleboard or MDF with a thin plastic or paper laminate bonded to the surface.
That single fact changes the whole job. Paint does not soak into laminate the way it soaks into timber, because there is nothing to soak into. It has to grip a slick, sealed, non-porous plastic face.
So here is the honest order of importance: the bonding primer matters more than the sanding. You can sand laminate perfectly and still have paint peel off in sheets if you use the wrong primer. And you can get an excellent, durable result with only a light scuff — provided the primer is right.
There is also a hard limit worth knowing before you start: you must not sand through the laminate. Underneath is raw particleboard, which is ugly, absorbent and cannot be sanded smooth. ✅

Laminate, Melamine, Thermofoil — What Is What
These names get used interchangeably and they are not quite the same thing.
Melamine
Paper impregnated with melamine resin and bonded to particleboard or MDF under heat and pressure. This is what most flat-pack furniture is. It is hard, very smooth, usually white or a printed wood pattern, and completely non-porous.
High-pressure laminate (HPL)
Thicker and tougher — the material used on kitchen worktops. Same principle, more layers, more durable. Sometimes called by the brand name Formica.
Thermofoil / vinyl wrap
A vinyl film heat-formed over shaped MDF, common on kitchen cabinet doors with moulded profiles. It wraps around edges rather than stopping at them, and its characteristic failure is peeling away from the substrate, especially near heat sources.
Wood veneer
Real wood, and a completely different material — see sanding veneer. If it is genuine timber you have more options, including staining.
Wood accepts a finish. Laminate only ever gets a finish stuck to it. That is why the bond, not the surface, is what you are really working on.
Identifying What You Have
Two minutes of checking saves a failed paint job.
- Look at a chipped corner or the back. Particleboard speckle or smooth MDF underneath means laminate. Continuous grain means solid wood.
- Look at the edge. Melamine board usually has a separate edge strip with a visible seam. Thermofoil wraps continuously around the profile with no seam.
- Check for repeating pattern. Printed wood-effect laminate repeats its grain pattern exactly across different panels — real wood never does.
- Feel the texture. Melamine is glassy-smooth and slightly cold. Wood has grain you can feel.
- Look inside a drawer or behind the unit. Manufacturers rarely laminate hidden surfaces with the good finish.

Why Paint Fails on Laminate
Understanding this makes the rest obvious.
On timber, paint partly soaks into the porous surface and forms a mechanical grip. On laminate there is no porosity at all — the surface is a sealed resin face designed specifically to resist stains, moisture and scratching. Everything that makes laminate good furniture makes it bad for paint.
So paint has only two ways to stay on:
- Mechanical key — microscopic scratches from scuffing that give it something to hold.
- Chemical adhesion — a primer specifically formulated to bond to slick surfaces.
Ordinary primer relies almost entirely on the first, which is not enough on its own. That is why laminate painted with standard primer looks fine for weeks and then scratches off with a fingernail — it is sitting on the surface rather than bonded to it.
Scuff, Do Not Sand
Here is the part that feels wrong to anyone used to woodworking.
Your goal is not to smooth the surface — it is already smooth. It is not to remove material either. It is simply to take the shine off, creating fine scratches for the primer to grip.
How to do it:
- Use 180 to 220 grit, or a fine abrasive pad. Nothing coarser.
- Work by hand with a block or sponge. A power sander removes far more than needed and can cut straight through at edges.
- Light pressure. You are dulling, not cutting.
- Cover everything. Uniform matt across the whole surface, including profiles, edges and the areas around handles.
- Stop as soon as the shine is gone. There is no benefit to going further and real risk in doing so.
What breaking through looks like: the colour changes suddenly, often to a pale brown or grey, and the surface goes from glassy to slightly fuzzy. That is the particleboard or MDF core, and once you are there it will absorb paint completely differently from everything around it. Seal any breakthrough with several coats of primer before painting.
The Primer Is the Whole Job

A bonding primer (sometimes called an adhesion primer) is specifically formulated to stick to difficult, non-porous surfaces — laminate, melamine, glossy paint, tile, glass, PVC and metal. It creates the chemical grip that mechanical scuffing alone cannot.
What to look for on the tin: the words bonding or adhesion, and an explicit mention of laminate, melamine or glossy surfaces. If the tin does not name those, it is probably not the right product.
How to apply it:
- Surface must be clean and completely dry. Any grease defeats even the best primer.
- Apply thin, even coats. Thick primer stays soft and defeats the purpose.
- Two thin coats beat one heavy one.
- Respect the recoat time on the tin.
- Give it a light 220 pass between primer and topcoat for a smoother finish.
- Allow the primer its full cure before heavy handling.

Step by Step, Start to Finish
Step 1 — Take it apart
Doors off, drawers out, hardware removed and bagged. Label everything. Flat-pack furniture goes back together in one specific way.
Step 2 — Clean thoroughly
Degrease with sugar soap or a dedicated cleaner. Laminate furniture collects hand oils, polish and — in kitchens — cooking grease. Rinse and dry completely.
Step 3 — Repair chips and damage
Fill chipped corners and edges with a fine filler. Overfill slightly, cure fully, then sand flush at 180 and feather outward.
Step 4 — Scuff at 180 to 220
By hand. Uniform matt everywhere. Stop as soon as the shine is gone.
Step 5 — Clean again
Vacuum the dust and wipe with a barely damp cloth. Let it dry fully. Any residue interferes with the primer bond.
Step 6 — Apply bonding primer
Thin coats, all surfaces, including edges and the backs of doors. Two coats is the norm.
Step 7 — Light sand at 220
Between primer and topcoat. This is what makes the finish feel smooth rather than slightly gritty.
Step 8 — Two thin topcoats
With a light 320 pass between them. Use a durable cabinet or trim paint, not wall emulsion.
Step 9 — Cure before use
Touch-dry is hours; full cure is commonly two to three weeks. Reassemble gently and treat carefully during that window.
Chipped Edges and Damaged Corners
Almost every piece of second-hand laminate furniture has damage in the same places, because those are the places that get knocked.
Chipped edge strips
The thin banding on melamine board chips easily. You have two options: fill and sand smooth, then paint over — which works well since you are painting anyway — or replace the banding with iron-on edging.
Swollen corners from water damage
This is the one to check carefully. If particleboard has got wet, it swells irreversibly and goes soft and crumbly. Painting over a swollen corner does not fix it and the swelling will show. Cut back to sound material and fill, or accept the piece is not worth the effort.
Exposed particleboard
Wherever the core is showing, seal it with several coats of primer before the topcoat. Raw particleboard is extremely absorbent and will drink paint unevenly, leaving a visibly different patch.
Peeling thermofoil
If the vinyl film is lifting from the MDF beneath, painting will not stop it — heat and moisture will keep pushing it off. Small lifted areas can sometimes be re-bonded with contact adhesive and heat, but widespread peeling means the door is at the end of its life.
Paint Choice and Durability
Painted laminate is never going to be as tough as the original factory surface. That is worth accepting up front — the laminate was cured under heat and pressure in a factory, and no brush-applied coating matches that.

On worktops specifically: be realistic. A laminate kitchen worktop takes knives, hot pans, standing water and constant abrasion. Painted worktops rarely survive that, even with a clear coat over the top. Doors, cabinet sides, shelves and furniture are much better candidates.
Is It Even Worth Painting?
An honest question that saves wasted weekends.
Good candidates:
- The structure is sound — no swelling, no sagging shelves, no failing joints.
- The laminate is intact, even if dated or scratched.
- The piece is a useful size and shape you actually want.
- Replacement would cost significantly more than paint and time.
Poor candidates:
- Water-damaged particleboard — swollen edges cannot be recovered.
- Peeling thermofoil over most of the surface.
- Sagging or broken carcasses — paint does not add strength.
- Very cheap flat-pack where a new unit costs less than the primer and paint.
- Worktops and heavy-wear horizontal surfaces.
Also consider the alternatives: vinyl wrap film gives a factory-like finish with no paint at all, and replacement doors on a sound carcass are often cheaper than people expect.

Mistake 1 — Using ordinary primer
What happens: paint scratches off with a fingernail within weeks.
The fix: a dedicated bonding primer that names laminate or glossy surfaces on the tin.

Pro Tips Worth Knowing
Test on the back of a door first
Full sequence — clean, scuff, prime, paint — on a hidden surface. Let it cure a few days, then try scratching it with a coin. That tells you more than any product review.
Prime the backs and insides too
Sealing all faces stops moisture getting into the particleboard through the unpainted side.
Use a foam roller for flats
It leaves the least texture, which matters because a smooth painted laminate finish is what makes the piece look intentional rather than resurfaced.
Consider a clear topcoat on high-wear pieces
A water-based clear over the paint adds real abrasion resistance on shelves and desks.
Do not chase a perfectly smooth edge
Filled and painted edges will never be as crisp as factory banding. Slightly eased corners look better than an obviously patched sharp edge.
Give it longer than you think
Laminate has no absorbency, so paint dries only by evaporation from the surface. It genuinely takes longer to harden than paint on wood.

Do I need to sand laminate furniture before painting?
